Jets prolong Oilers' misery with OT win
Dec 4, 2014 - 5:39 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Mathieu Perreault's redirection goal came only 17 seconds into overtime and lifted Winnipeg to a 3-2 victory over hapless Edmonton at MTS Centre. The Jets controlled the puck following the faceoff to begin the extra session, and on the dump-in to the Edmonton zone, Evander Kane fished the puck away from the left-wing boards.
He dished to the point for Jacob Trouba, whose wrister was tipped en route by Perreault to end the contest.
"I think the offense kind of comes. We don't really look at it or look for it, it comes with the style we play," said Trouba. "We don't get a ton of chances but we have to make the most of the chances we do get."
Trouba finished with a goal and two assists, while Dustin Byfuglien supplied the other marker for the Jets, who improved to 2-2 in games decided by the five-minute overtime period.
Ondrej Pavelec made 22 saves as Winnipeg has taken three of its last four outings.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Teddy Purcell lit the lamp for the Oilers, who remained winless against Western Conference competition this season.
Ben Scrivens stopped 23 shots as Edmonton has dropped 11 straight games and three of its last four beyond regulation.
Trouba finished off an odd-man rush with a bullet from between the circles at 12:33 of the first, then Nugent-Hopkins evened the score with 2:01 before the game's first extended break on a long screened shot.
The Oilers took a 2-1 lead 91 seconds into the third as David Perron's individual effort to cross from the left wing into the slot ended when his shot deflected off Purcell's stick before settling under the crossbar.
Byfuglien forced overtime on his marker with 3:06 left in regulation, a nifty between-the-legs redirection of a Mark Stuart wrister from the left side.
"It [the tying goal] was going wide," said Scrivens of the shot which he did not see. "He's a big man, and obviously very dangerous in front, and he's got a really good set of hands on him too. It wouldn't surprise me if it was a very nice tip."
