Flames beat Ovechkin, Caps in OT

Nov 5, 2014 - 4:16 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Monahan's goal 4:17 into overtime gave the Calgary Flames a 4-3 win on Tuesday over the Washington Capitals and new franchise points leader Alex Ovechkin.

Monahan ended a back-and-forth game by beating Braden Holtby from the low left side off a pass from Josh Jooris that was tipped by a Washington player.

Lance Bouma, Mark Giordano and Markus Granlund also scored for Calgary, with Granlund's goal going off an opponent's skate to tie the score at 14:50 of the third period.

Jonas Hiller, who also let in an own-goal during the game, had 31 saves in the Flames' third straight win -- none better than a pad stop on Tom Wilson in the final seconds of regulation.

Hiller improved to 6-0-1 in his last seven outings and Calgary moved to 5-1-2 in its last eight.

Ovechkin broke a tie with Peter Bondra to become the Capitals' all-time points leader with an assist on Nicklas Backstrom's goal in the first period. He had two assists, giving him 827 points in his 10th season.

The Capitals have lost five games in a row, but earned a point for the first time in the slump. It's their first five-game skid since an 0-3-2 stretch from March 25-April 4 last season.

"No question about the effort. Everybody played hard," Ovechkin said. "We stuck together and fought for it together. We just have to keep playing hard."

Holtby allowed four goals on 23 shots and Marcus Johansson and Joel Ward also scored in the loss.

Both goaltenders were the victims of cruel bounces.

Washington tied the score in the second period when a puck went off the end boards and then Hiller's pad, and the Flames knotted it with 5:10 remaining on Granlund's goal.

He threw the puck in front of the net from the end boards and Johansson tried to clear it, but instead sent it off the skate of teammate Troy Brouwer and past an unsuspecting Holtby.

"It was one of the weirdest games that I've seen," said Flames coach Bob Hartley. "But that's the beauty of our sport."

Earlier, Bouma scored 9:09 into the game on a rebound off Kris Russell's wrist shot from the high right side.

Ovechkin's wrister from inside the blue line on the left side made it through traffic and was tipped in by Backstrom, tying the score 69 seconds later for Washington.

After Giordano skated into the slot and beat Holtby with a backhand to give Calgary the lead at 10:20 of the second period, Washington tied it again 43 seconds later when Johansson got lucky with a blast off the end boards.

The puck caromed into the crease and hit off Hiller's left pad as he turned to play it.

The Capitals took a 3-2 lead on a two-man advantage with Curtis Glencross off for roughing and Dennis Wideman in the box on a delay-of-game penalty. Ward scored on a one-timer from the low left side off Backstrom's pass across the crease.

Washington's last win was a 3-1 decision in Calgary on Oct. 25 ... Bondra had 472 goals and 353 assists in 961 games for the Capitals between 1990 and 2004. Ovechkin passed him on the scoring list in his 691st game ... The Flames are in Tampa Bay on Thursday ... The Capitals play in Chicago on Friday.
