Flames take down Jets

Feb 3, 2015 - 6:39 AM Calgary, AB ( - Raphael Diaz scored the game-winning goal in the third period to guide the Calgary Flames in a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

David Jones, Mason Raymond, Sean Monahan and Brandon Bollig also scored for the Flames, who have won three of their last four. Jonas Hiller turned away 17 shots in the win.

"We have nothing to celebrate," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "We can be proud of the way we play. We can be happy with where we're at. But there's still way too much hockey to be played to get complacent.

Bryan Little had a goal and an assist and Blake Wheeler also scored for the Jets, who have dropped their past four. Michael Hutchinson allowed four goals on 23 shots and was pulled early in the third period. Ondrej Pavelec stopped all four shots he faced in relief.

"We've got to get back to our game," said Wheeler. "We have to come back harder, we have to allow our D to step up and take away the other team's time and space. This is a team we played tonight with a lot of skill that can come at you in waves and we just didn't do a good enough job."

The Flames went on top, 2-1, at 1:59 of the second as the puck came through the neutral zone and Raymond caught up to it in the Winnipeg end, quickly snapping it in for his seventh of the season.

Skating on the power play in the third, Calgary took a 3-1 lead as Diaz's big slap shot from the high slot found the back of the net at 4:24.

It was a 4-1 game three minutes later as Joe Colborne skated down the right wing and backhanded it to the front where Bollig redirected it in for his first of the season.

Winnipeg answered just over a minute later when Little snapped a rebound high into the net for his 19th of the season to make it a 4-2 contest.

The Jets pulled Pavelec with under three minutes to play, but Monahan sealed the victory a bit later as he slammed the puck into the empty net.

Wheeler scored just 69 seconds into the game to give the Jets the lead on a wrister from the left circle, but Jones tied the game three minutes later when he skated down the middle and fought off a check to backhand the puck in.
