Jets fly past Devils
Nov 19, 2014 - 4:30 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Frolik scored a third-period goal and collected an assist, helping the Winnipeg Jets beat the New Jersey Devils 3-1 on Tuesday.Mathieu Perreault and Mark Scheifele scored 1:44 apart in the second period and Michael Hutchinson stopped 21 shots for the Jets, who opened a three-game homestand following a 2-2-1 road trip.
Patrik Elias was credited with a goal early in the third for New Jersey, which has dropped two straight games and six of eight overall.
Cory Schneider allowed three goals on 34 shots in his 19th consecutive start. He tied Martin Brodeur's Devils record for the longest stretch to begin a season.
New Jersey converted on a power play in the third. On the rush, Elias gathered a pass from Martin Havlat at the Winnipeg blue line and fired a backhander from the right circle that Hutchinson failed to glove. Hutchinson reached back in an attempt to cover up the puck in the crease, but it wound up sliding across the goal line.
The Devils came close to tying the game after killing their 17th straight penalty as Mike Cammalleri hit the right post with 4:30 remaining.
Frolik extended Winnipeg's lead less than a minute later. Schneider turned away Adam Lowry's left-wing shot, but Frolik buried the rebound with 3:53 to play.
"We took a few too many penalties than we would like, but as we've seen in the last few games, we're much more confident on the penalty kill," Schneider said.
New Jersey killed off consecutive penalties in the first period, including a brief 5-on-3. Winnipeg came up empty on eight chances with the man advantage in Sunday's 4-3 overtime loss at Minnesota and finished 0-for-5 against the Devils.
"Clearly the power play is a sore spot for us and it has to get better," said Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice.
The Jets were able to score twice early in the second period.
Perreault roofed a backhander off a feed from Mark Stuart following a faceoff win at 1:54, then Scheifele backhanded in the rebound of a Frolik shot at 3:38.
