Three second-period goals lift Kings past Canucks

Oct 20, 2007 - 5:48 AM
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Kings scored three goals in less than a seven-minute span and Jason LaBarbera made 25 saves en route to a 4-2 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.

After Vancouver control the opening period, Los Angeles' offense came alive in the second session.

Defenseman Jack Johnson got it started with his first career goal at 3:04. On a 2-on-1 rush, Kyle Calder sent a pass under the stick of Canucks blue-liner Aaron Miller to the 20-year-old, who ripped a one-timer past goaltender Roberto Luongo to tie the game at 1-1.

"Someone's got (his first career goal puck)," said a jovial Johnson, the third overall pick by Carolina in 2005. "I don't know who has it, but I asked someone to pick it up. I'm sure I'll see it soon."

The goal came shortly after a 2-on-none break by Vancouver. But LaBarbera turned aside Alex Burrows' attempt, and Canucks' rookie Mason Raymond got caught with an ill-advised pinch at the Kings' blue line that gave Calder and Johnson their chance.

"I was playing pass the whole way," said LaBarbera, whose huge save seemed to energize the Kings. "In those situations, you almost have to. It's tough, but I kind of read it coming and I just slowed my right leg and waited for him to pass. He made the pass and I got over."

Less than three minutes later, Michael Cammalleri scored his league-leading eighth tally of the season. With Los Angeles on the power play, Anze Kopitar sent a centering feed to Cammalleri from the right corner, and the Michigan alum was denied twice before finally knocking in the puck on his third attempt to give the Kings a 2-1 advantage.

"It's one of those plays that the defenseman was trying to clear the puck and I'm trying to put it in," Cammalleri said. "He missed it and I got it."

Los Angeles struck again at 9:57 of the middle session. Ladislav Nagy made a pass to blue-liner Lubomir Visnovsky, who faked a one-time blast from the left faceoff circle and sent a perfect feed to Alexander Frolov for the easy goal. It was Frolov's first tally of the campaign and extended his points streak to five games.

"What was so nice about that was, in the first period, they got a lot of power plays and as a result, we didn't get many good scoring (chances)," Cammalleri said of the Kings' three quick goals. "We came in here (after the first period) and regrouped and got ready to go out.

"We said, 'Listen guys, it's not that we're doing things awful, it's just that we've been shorthanded all period. We haven't had a chance to really get some scoring chances. We're going to get all the chances here in the second. Let's stick to the things we want to do.'"

The Canucks came out strong in the first period behind the high-energy line of Matt Cooke, Ryan Kesler and Burrows. The trio used good forechecking to help Vancouver open the scoring at 12:19.

After the Kings failed to clear on multiple attempts, Kesler forced a turnover and got the puck to Burrows, who put a shot on goal. Cooke hauled in the rebound and fired a wrist shot past LaBarbera for his first tally of the season.

"We're a line that gets in and generates stuff off the forecheck," Kesler said. "I think that's what we need to continue to do and just feed off that."

The Canucks nearly added another on a power play late in the first, but defenseman Mattias Ohlund's point shot hit the goalpost.

LaBarbera, who kept the Kings in the game when they were struggling in the opening session, continued to make big saves throughout the game.

With the 6-foot-4 Taylor Pyatt screening him, LaBarbera still managed to glove Brendan Morrison's slap shot with just over 13 minutes remaining in the contest. The 27-year-old netminder turned aside 11 shots in the final period.

"It's huge. It's huge for everybody in this room - not only myself, but every guy in the room, too," said LaBarbera, who picked up his first win of the season. "We played well in the last three games and we played well last night but just didn't get the result. It was nice to be able to come in here and get the win like this."

However, the Canucks finally scored again with 5:47 remaining in the contest as the line of Kesler, Cooke and Burrows put together another great shift. Kesler carried the puck into the offensive zone and made a drop pass to Ohlund, who blistered a wrist shot past LaBarbera to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Kings, who managed just two shots in the third, were awarded a goal when Dustin Brown was taken down on a breakaway with an empty net ahead of him.

Last season's Vezina and Hart Trophy runner-up, Luongo turned aside just 13 of the 16 shots he faced.
