Lundqvist carries Rangers past Lightning
Nov 22, 2007 - 4:32 AM TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- After the New York Rangers' five-game winning streak ended Monday, Henrik Lundqvist made sure the team started a new streak Wednesday.Lundqvist came within 17 seconds of his fifth shutout of the season, while Fedor Tyutin and Colton Orr scored a goal apiece as the Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 2-1.
Lundqvist (12-8-1) stopped 32 of 33 shots, silencing the Lightning's high-powered offense. Tampa Bay had won eight of its 10 home games and scored a league-best 42 goals at home, but it was unable to solve Lundqvist until right wing Michel Ouellet's goal with 17 seconds remaining.
"It's always tough to lose a shutout like that when it's so close and it felt like I had a good shutout going here, but maybe they deserved one goal," Lundqvist said. "It's always tough when you let in a late goal like that."
Midway through the first period, the Rangers scored their first goal on Tyutin's one-timer from inside the blue line. Tampa Bay goaltender Johan Holmqvist actually got his glove on Tyutin's shot, but couldn't hold on and it trickled into the net.
Orr added his first goal of the season 2:04 into the final period, beating Holmqvist low on his stick side.
"It was a great game, Lundqvist played great," Orr said. "It was a good road win, we needed those two points. We're playing well, we're playing four lines rolling. We're playing hard."
Lundqvist frustrated Tampa Bay all night. The Lightning were on the power play in the third when Lundqvist stopped a point-blank shot from the slot from Martin St. Louis.
Later in the third, Vinny Prospal got a shot past Lundqvist, but right wing Brendan Shanahan scooped the puck out of the net before it completely cross the goal line.
The officials reviewed the play and ruled no goal, preserving the shutout.
"Well Shanahan, night in and night out, he's our big gun," Scott Gomez said. "He's there, he's always in the right position, he knows where to go. He knows how to play and it's important. He always comes up big."
Center Vincent Lecavalier also had his eight-game consecutive multi-point streak halted. It was the NHL's longest since 1996.
"We played a good game, we played hard, we playing right on through," Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella said. "Even when they scored their second goal, I don't think we gave in at all. We kept on playing. Lundqvist is probably the best goalie in the world right now."
Tampa Bay had won five of the past six games against the Rangers.
"You make it hard on a goalie when you get traffic in front of the net and you put the puck on net," St. Louis said. "You have to fight through that. We just couldn't get the result."
The Rangers were without defensemen Michael Rozsival (knee) and Marek Malik (back).
