Bonk, Mason help Predators notch rare win over Red Wings

Nov 23, 2007 - 5:04 AM By Jim Diamond PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Radek Bonk scored the decisive goal and Chris Mason stopped 28 shots as the Nashville Predators posted a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in Thursday's Thanksgiving Night contest.

Martin Erat had a goal and two assists for Nashville, which snapped a five-game losing streak to Detroit.

With the game tied at 2-2, Bonk snapped a wrist shot from the low slot that snuck inside the right goal post and crossbar over goaltender Dominik Hasek's glove for a power-play tally at 2:22 of the third period.

"I was trying to go high, because I thought (Hasek) was going to go low," Bonk said. "I didn't even have time to look up, and luckily I hit a good spot."

It was the team-leading ninth goal of the season for Bonk, who also recorded a tally in Monday's 2-1 loss to St. Louis.

"Right now, they just seem to be going in for me," Bonk said.

Henrik Zetterberg did his best to extend the Red Wings' winning streak to three games as he put them up 2-1 on a power-play goal with 1:24 of the second period. Zetterberg skated through the slot, and beat Mason with a wrist shot high to the stick side.

"We drew penalties early, but you knew the numbers were going to even out in the end," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "There were a lot of specialty teams, and I don't think that worked to our advantage. Their goalie played well too, he made some big saves."

Nashville, which has won two straight, tied the game just 32 seconds later on a goal by Erat. Defenseman Shea Weber's slap shot from the center of the blue line was stopped by Hasek, but Erat was right there to corral the rebound and convert for his sixth goal of the season.

"We got a huge shift right after their goal and that got us back on even terms," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "The work ethic for our team is really strong right now. "

The Predators trailed 1-0 in the first, but captain Jason Arnott tied the game at 1-1 with his eighth goal of the season at the 12:20 mark.

"They are a good team, and play so well in their own zone, you have to do cycles on them," Arnott said. "To capitalize on a good opportunity like that was good."

Erat created a turnover in the right corner of Detroit's zone and slid a pass to J.P. Dumont below the goal line. Dumont then slid a pass to Arnott in the low slot, where he hit a one-timer through the pads of Hasek.

"I saw two guys coming behind me, so somebody has to be open," Erat said. "J.P. was open, I gave it to him, and he gave it to Arnie in front of the net."

Johan Franzen opened the scoring with his first goal of the season at 2:49 of the opening period. Franzen lifted a backhand over the right shoulder of Mason from the left side of the net for a power-play tally.

Hasek stopped 26 shots for Detroit, which was 2-for-8 with a man advantage.

"I got into the game and I felt good after I made a few saves," Hasek said. "The bottom line is that we lost the game, which is really disappointing."
