Bergfors scores two goals as Devils edge Flyers

Sep 25, 2007 - 2:29 AM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Nicklas Bergfors scored two goals and Rod Pelley also tallied as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-1, in a preseason contest Monday.

Making his first appearance in preseason, goaltender Martin Brodeur stopped all eight shots he faced for the Devils, who avenged an early exhibition loss to the Flyers.

The Devils scored on their first power-play attempt to take a 1-0 lead at the 7:50 mark of the first period. With Derian Hatcher off for interference, Bergfors scored his first goal when he took the pass from Karel Racheunek and fired a left circle slap shot through the pads of netminder Martin Brion.

New Jersey made it 2-0 when Pelley deflected a shot from Sergi Brelyn's slap shot from the top of the slot. The deflection went past the glove side of Brion then off of the post and in the net.

The Flyers had one last chance to tie the game as they went with an extra skater in the game's final minute. Simon Gagne's shot from the right side was stopped by Frank Doyle. Brian Gionta picked up the rebound and fed Bergfors, who recorded his second goal of the game with 20.1 seconds to go in the game.

Biron made 22 saves for Philadelphia, which got its lone tally from Daniel Briere in the final period.
