Eaves nets goal in overtime to lift Senators past Maple Leafs

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Patrick Eaves' goal 53 seconds into overtime lifted the Ottawa Senators to a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a preseason game Monday.

The power-play goal was setup by Jason Spezza - his third assist of the game - just 24 seconds after Hal Gill was sent to the penalty box for tripping.

Goaltender Martin Gerber, who will be fighting for playing time with Ray Emery, made 35 saves for the Senators, who are 4-0 in the preseason.

Christoph Schubert scored two goals and Dany Heatley added a goal and two assists for Ottawa, which held a 3-1 lead midway through the second period.

Alexei Ponikarovsky tied the game with 8:50 left in the third period for Toronto, which also got goals from Mats Sundin and John Pohl.

Toronto goaltender Andrew Raycroft made 28 saves. Raycroft is in the midst of his own battle for starts as the Maple Leafs also have Vesa Toskala on the roster, who is expected to compete for playing time as well.

Toronto, which outshot Ottawa, 18-8, in the third period, had nine different players register one point in the contest.
