Red Wings rally to edge Blackhawks in shootout

Dec 7, 2008 - 4:57 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Pavel Datsyuk scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Detroit Red Wings rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

Valtteri Filppula, Jiri Hudler, Henrik Zetterberg and Marian Hossa scored in regulation for the Red Wings, who overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Blackhawks in the bonus format for the second time this season.

Captain Jonathan Toews netted a pair of goals and Patrick Sharp and Andrew Ladd also tallied for Chicago, which has lost four of its last five contests (1-2-2).

"We were playing the perfect game until the third," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "They were very opportunistic on their chances. It was a good effort on our part. A tough ending."

Detroit goaltender Ty Conklin made 28 saves before turning away Toews, Sharp and Patrick Kane in the shootout.

"Last game, I saw the same guys," Conklin said. "Kane deked, and Toews and Sharp both shot. I thought Sharp would shoot, but I wasn't sure about Toews. More than anything, I think you try to dictate what they're going to do with your positioning.

"Sometimes guys make up their minds that they're going to shoot, but I think those three guys will try to take what you give them and then decide what they're going to do."

Datsyuk opened the shootout with his goal, making a quick move to his backhand and firing a shot that trickled past netminder Cristobal Huet.

"I don't try to watch eyes so he won't scare me," Datsyuk said. "I tried to do my move, fake forehand and go backhand. I tried to shoot higher, but it worked."

After Zetterberg and Hossa failed to add to the Red Wings' cushion, Conklin managed to poke-check the puck away from Kane on his attempt to seal the win.

Detroit jumped to a 2-0 advantage in the first five minutes on goals by Filppula and Hudler, who has scored nine times in his last 10 games. But that lead was short-lived as Sharp halved the deficit with a power-play tally at 9:08 of the opening period.

The Blackhawks took a 3-2 edge into the first intermission after Toews scored twice in the last four minutes of the first. On his first goal, Toews split the defensemen and tucked a backhander past Conklin to tie the game.

"After Chicago scored those first two goals, they had us back on our heels," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "They were able to spread out the ice, and with their speed, they're dangerous."

The 20-year-old Toews then put Chicago in front with five seconds left in the period, lifting a wrist shot over a crouching Conklin during a power play. It was Toews' seventh goal of the season.

"It was a tough first period," Conklin said. "I'm not going to beat myself up too much about the first two, but the third one I'd like to have back, with four seconds on the clock. As a team, I thought we played better, too."

Ladd added to the lead early in the second period and the Blackhawks carried a two-goal bulge into the final session.

Zetterberg started Detroit's comeback with his 12th goal of the campaign at 6:32 of the third and Hossa netted the tying goal with a wrist shot that beat Huet with 9:37 remaining.

"I was just waiting for the puck to come to me," Hossa said. "When it came to me, I saw a little opening over his right arm and I hit it."
