Lundqvist, Rangers top Hurricanes in shootout

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- One night after an embarrassing performance across the Hudson River, Henrik Lundqvist and captain Chris Drury helped the New York Rangers turn things around.

Lundqvist denied five shooters and Drury scored the lone goal of the shootout in the fifth round as the Rangers squandered a pair of leads before pulling out a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

Markus Naslund scored a power-play goal and Blair Betts added a shorthanded tally for New York, which was coming off an ugly 8-5 loss at New Jersey on Friday. In that one, the Rangers rallied from a 5-1 deficit before allowing three straight goals off turnovers in their worst defensive performance of the season.

"It was important to play well," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "Obviously, it's all about the two points, and we wanted those in the worst way. For a group that lost a really tough game last night, I thought we were terrific in a lot of ways."

"Everyone was saying that on the bench, how great the second point would be," Drury added. "We knew we got one (point). After last night and the 20 hours earlier and the feeling in Jersey, it was a big turnaround for Hank (Lundqvist) and our defense."

Lundqvist, who matched a career worst by allowing all eight goals by the Devils, helped ensure this would be a better showing for the Rangers. The Swede made 29 saves and helped successfully kill eight power plays by Carolina, including a four-minute double minor to Drury and a two-minute 5-on-3 in the third period.

"I really wanted to get this win, everybody did," Lundqvist said. "After last night, we were on a mission. It's a great feeling for me to be able to step up."

That helped maintain the 2-2 tie, and New York emerged victorious in the shootout when Drury deked Cam Ward and put a backhander past the goaltender.

"That was a do-or-die situation," Renney said of Drury's attempt. "As a result, to score a goal like that and have the confidence to do a move like that is pretty special. That's why guys like Chris wear letters on their jerseys."

It was the second shootout-deciding tally for Drury, and it came after he had missed a shorthanded breakaway in the third. It also occurred after Ward denied Naslund, Nikolai Zherdev, Fredrik Sjostrom and Gomez.

"I don't care what it looks like," Drury said. "If it goes in, it's good enough for me."

Lundqvist, who has posted seven wins in the bonus format this season, stopped former Ranger Matt Cullen, Sergei Samsonov, Ray Whitney and Eric Staal before Drury's heroics. He then secured the victory with a save of Justin Williams' attempt.

"When we didn't score, there was more pressure on me, but I did my job," Lundqvist said. "It was a great feeling coming back after last night and getting a big win."

"Lundqvist is very good in the shootout," Ward said. "He's a tough guy to beat, and he stood tall."

Tuomo Ruutu and Whitney tallied in regulation for the Hurricanes, who fell to 1-3-2 in their last six contests.

"We don't have a regulation loss in our last four," Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. "But we can't throw too many parties for that because we are playing well enough to have a better fate."

Ward returned from a groin injury and made 27 saves for Carolina, which was coming off an embarrassing 6-5 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday in which it squandered a four-goal lead in the third period.

Naslund opened the scoring 7:27 into the contest with a one-timer from the lower edge of the right faceoff circle, converting a pass from Scott Gomez. Naslund's 12th goal this season was the Rangers' first power-play tally since November 26.

Just before the goal could be announced to the crowd, the Hurricanes forged a tie 22 seconds later on a delayed penalty. Following a turnover, Ruutu scored his 10th goal of the campaign by driving to the net.

New York regained the lead moments after Sjostrom's check knocked Carolina captain Rod Brind'Amour off the puck in the neutral zone. Sjostrom skated up the right wing and centered a pass to Betts, who put a snap shot over Ward's stick from the low slot with 3:05 remaining in the first.

"Getting a shorthanded goal is always a good feeling," Betts said. "It gives you an extra boost. It was nice that our power play clicked at the start of the game. Special teams were a big part of our win tonight."

Carolina again knotted the contest at 7:19 of the second, when Whitney's quick wrist shot from the slot sailed past Lundqvist's glove.
