Franzen, Hudler lead Red Wings over Coyotes

Dec 14, 2008 - 6:57 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The winning ways of the Detroit Red Wings did not evaporate in the desert.

Johan Franzen scored twice in regulation and Jiri Hudler netted the decisive goal of the shootout in the fourth round to lift the Red Wings to a 5-4 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday.

Henrik Zetterberg also tallied in the bonus format to support Chris Osgood, who made 24 saves before denying Coyotes captain Shane Doan's attempt in the fourth round to secure the victory.

"That was a good character win for us, the way we scratched and clawed and fought, then found a way to win the game," Osgood said.

Tomas Holmstrom and Zetterberg each recorded a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who improved to 14-1-4 in one-goal contests. Detroit had won four games in a row before falling, 3-1, in Dallas on Friday.

Rookie Mikkel Boedker and Joakim Lindstrom both netted a tally and set up another while Doan and Steven Reinprecht also scored for Phoenix, which had its two-game winning streak halted.

Peter Mueller beat Osgood with a wrist shot in the first round after Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov turned aside Pavel Datsyuk's attempt. Zetterberg then used a deke and a wrister to pull Detroit even, and Osgood made a stick save to stymie Lindstrom in the following round.

"Give (Osgood) credit," Lindstrom said. "I thought I had him, he didn't give up on the move. He came back with his stick and made a great save."

Franzen and Coyotes rookie Kyle Turris each missed with their shots in the third before Hudler used a wrister to beat Bryzgalov, giving the Red Wings the edge. Osgood poked away the puck from Doan's stick to seal his 375th career victory, putting him in sole possession of 12th place on the all-time list ahead of John Vanbiesbrouck.

"I didn't know the first guy (Mueller), but the second guy (Lindstrom), I knew what he was going to do," Osgood said. "I knew Doan might try to fake it and pull it the other way, so I tried to be patient and then be aggressive and stay out. I've been around so long, guys know me, so I try to switch off sometimes."

Reinprecht gave the Coyotes a 4-3 lead with 4:40 left in the third period before Franzen tallied with 21 seconds remaining to forge a tie.

"If we get down one or two goals, we put everything out there and keep rolling," Franzen said. "We are good at that, when we don't have anything to lose. We play better that way than with a lead. We have the confidence and know we can come from behind."

Zetterberg opened the scoring 33 seconds into the first, but Lindstrom knotted the game with 27 seconds remaining in the session.

After Doan scored a power-play goal 1:47 into the second to give Phoenix a 2-1 lead, Franzen struck for the first time five minutes later. The Swede, who netted a franchise-record 13 goals in the postseason in 2007-08, took advantage of Boedker's turnover at the blue line and beat Bryzgalov on a shorthanded breakaway with a wrist shot.

"I was coming with a lot of speed and put pressure on him," Franzen said. "I poke-checked him and the puck ended up in my belly and got a breakaway. I have been getting open nets and haven't seemed to find a way to get them in, but it's good to finally get two."

Boedker was not happy with his mistake.

"We deserved to win the game as much as they did," Boedker said. "I had a mistake that cost a goal, and that was on me, but we came back strong.

"It's never fun to make that kind of mistake. I tried to do a risky move on the blue line that didn't work, so the next time, I'll just make the safe play. It was a wake-up call for me to not be that cocky with the puck."

Holmstrom converted a power-play chance with 9:43 left in the second to give Detroit a 3-2 bulge. But Phoenix answered with a man-advantage goal of its own midway through the third to pull even.

The eighth overall selection in this past June's draft, Boedker forged a 3-3 tie with 9 1/2 minutes remaining, beating Osgood from the doorstep after receiving a cross-crease pass from Lindstrom.

"Tonight was a tough way to lose the game, with 20 seconds left on a power play, but they're a good team and they keep competing," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "It just happened. It was one of those things.

"We're playing solid right now. We're happy the way we're playing. We had some breakdowns tonight, but overall, we're playing well as a group, and I like the way we're competing game in and game out."

Bryzgalov made 34 saves.

Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios, who turns 47 next month, made his first appearance of the season and logged 10 minutes, 27 seconds of ice time.

"I thought he did a real good job in the first period," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "The second period, he got caught on (the ice) long, and when you haven't been playing, that kills you. But I thought he did a real good job for the first time back."

Chelios recently played two games with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League on a conditioning assignment. He had been sidelined since suffering a broken right tibia while blocking a shot in a preseason game against the Montreal Canadiens on September 30.
