Brown, Kopitar power Kings past Ducks
Feb 19, 2009 - 7:14 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Captain Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar scored a power-play goal nearly six minutes apart in the third period to propel the Los Angeles Kings to a 4-3 triumph over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday in a battle of Pacific Division rivals.Jarett Stoll recorded a goal and two assists and Patrick O'Sullivan also tallied as Los Angeles snapped its three-game losing streak.
Defenseman Matt Greene notched two assists and Jonathan Quick finished with 28 saves for the Kings.
"It was poised at the start and I thought very poised in the last four minutes of the game," Los Angeles coach Terry Murray said. "That was important for us to show that kind of start. The last three games have not gone the way we'd like in the beginning and there is desperation on both sides."
"I think we handled (the pressure) pretty well," Quick said. "We came out with the win. We were up by a goal with a couple of minutes left and I don't think they got into our zone. We played great team defense and played great all game. It was a big win."
All-Star Ryan Getzlaf registered a goal and two assists and Teemu Selanne and Chris Kunitz also tallied for Anaheim, which played its last home game before a season-high six-game road trip.
"I think that this team is capable of winning and getting points," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "I still think this team is capable of winning. It's going to take a great effort on our behalf to string some wins together."
Jonas Hiller turned aside 22 shots for the Ducks, who dropped their second consecutive contest.
"We're disappointed," defenseman Scott Niedermayer said. "I think for the most part we worked hard and did a lot of things we wanted to do. Obviously, we had some mistakes happen and made some dumb decisions."
Brown and Kopitar capitalized on a pair of 5-on-3 advantages for Los Angeles.
With the game tied at 2-2 at the 9:35 mark, Brown gave the Kings the lead after his shot from the left faceoff circle beat Hiller. With 4:37 remaining, Kopitar netted what stood as the game-winning goal by tucking the puck past the Swiss netminder.
"Before, I don't know if we were really comfortable going into the third period with a one-goal lead," Kopitar said. "But we kept our composure, we got scored on, but we didn't back off and we kept on going. We drew some penalties and we were able to capitalize on the power play."
Kunitz scored 57 seconds later, but the Ducks could not net the equalizer.
