Moss' hat trick helps Flames sink Senators
Mar 4, 2009 - 4:27 AM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- David Moss recorded his first career hat trick and Jarome Iginla added two goals as the Calgary Flames doused the Ottawa Senators, 6-3, on Tuesday.Moss had the only goal of the second period. He took feeds from Craig Conroy and Adam Pardy before scoring on a snap shot at 4:57 of the middle session to make it 4-2. Calgary had only two shots on goal in the middle session, yet enjoyed the only goal.
Having given up four goals on 15 shots, Ottawa goaltender Alex Auld was replaced at the start of the third period as Brian Elliott took over in goal.
Moss welcomed Elliott at 2:04 with another goal off a snap shot. His 18th of the season came on the power play off feeds from Jamie Lundmark and Adrian Aucoin.
Moss capped his hat trick with an empty-net goal in the final minute as Calgary started a seven-game road swing with a victory.
"It's nice but more important to get the win and start the long trip on the right foot," Moss said. "The way we played against Tampa (an 8-6 loss) we really needed to come out with a strong effort."
Coach Mike Keenan loved Moss' performance.
"Moss came up with a big game," Keenan said. "It was nice to see, he had more ice time and he is becoming important for what we are trying to improve on. He was doing a lot of work for us and now he is contributing."
Iginla, the leading point scorer in Calgary history, opened the scoring by drilling a wrist shot off a feed from Matthew Lombardi at 2:18 of the first period.
Ottawa actually bounced back to score the next two goals and take the lead. Dany Heatley and Brendan Bell set up Filip Kuba on the power play to knot the game at 1-1 at 5:28 of the first.
At 9:45, Mike Fisher tipped the puck past Miikka Kiprusoff to give the Senators a 2-1 lead and the home crowd its few moments of enjoyment.
The Flames then erupted for four straight goals. Warren Peter scored on a wrist shot at 12:26 of the first and Iginla added his second of the night and 28th of the season off a feed from Mike Cammalleri at 15:49.
"The biggest goal was Peter's goal," Iginla said. "Just getting called up and to see him get one was a big boost. I thought for us to get the goal was a big one."
The Senators closed within 5-3 on the power play when Nick Foligno tipped the puck past Kiprusoff at 14:58 for his 12th of the season.
"We just couldn't cash in our opportunities," Daniel Alfredsson said. "A few shots bounced around behind Kipper and a few more just went wide."
Ottawa is 1-4-2 in its last seven games.
