Stoll scores twice as Kings edge Canucks

Mar 10, 2009 - 5:45 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Jarret Stoll netted a pair of power-play goals as the Los Angeles Kings skated to their third straight win, a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday.

Defenseman Denis Gauthier also scored and rookie Teddy Purcell collected two assists for the Kings (29-28-9), who pulled within three points of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

We just have to worry about our game, things we have to do to be successful and I think we did that," Stoll said. "We did a good job of checking and we were all over the puck. There weren't too many odd man rushes. We locked it down defensively."

Rookie Jonathan Quick made 20 saves for Los Angeles, which will play eight of its next nine games on the road - including a stop in Vancouver on Friday.

"We've been treating all the games like playoff games," Quick said. "We are out of the playoffs by a couple of games and we are just fighting."

Alex Burrows and Taylor Pyatt tallied and All-Star Roberto Luongo stopped 19 shots for the Canucks, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Vancouver, which went 0-for-4 on the power play, had won 12 of its previous 14 contests.

"We struggled on the power play and we gave them two goals on their power play," Canucks center Daniel Sedin said. "It was not a good effort from us."

"Specialty teams were big in this game," Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. "We couldn't generate much on our power play and we made two mistakes that cost us."

Gauthier opened the scoring at 3:35 of the first period and Stoll doubled the advantage with 7:43 left in the session. Burrows halved the deficit at 4:40 of the second, but Stoll restored the two-goal bulge with 7:09 remaining in the period.

Pyatt provided the final margin at 5:26 of the third session and the Canucks failed to find the equalizer despite multiple chances in the final minute.
