Second-period spurt lifts Red Wings

Sep 25, 2006 - 2:00 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings scored three goals in a span of 6:27 of the second period to carry them to a 4-2 preseason victory over the Florida Panthers.

Trailing, 2-0, Detroit took over the game in the second period, outshooting Florida, 17-0, and scoring three times.

Johan Franzen sliced Florida's lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal at 11:59 before defenseman Mathieu Schneider's power-play tally at 17:49 tied the game. Schneider finished with a goal and two assists.

Detroit veteran Kris Draper capped the comeback just 37 seconds later with a goal set up by Kirk Maltby and 44-year-old blue-liner Chris Chelios.

Florida, playing its sixth game in eight nights, took a 2-0 lead in the first on goals from Janis Sprukts and defenseman Ric Jackman.

Six-time Vezina Trophy winner Dominik Hasek started for the Red Wings and played two periods, turning aside 10 of 12 shots. Hasek, who helped guide the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup in 2002, was signed as a free agent in the offseason.

Hasek was replaced by Stefan Liv, who stopped all 14 shots faced. Liv was Detroit's fourth-round selection in 2000.

Florida's Ed Belfour, whose 457 victories are second in NHL history, played the entire game for Florida, stopping 27 of 30 shots.
