Capitals complete season sweep of Flyers

Jan 10, 2007 - 4:58 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Flyers knew early on that it would be another long night.

Ben Clymer scored 15 seconds into the game, Alex Ovechkin added a pair of tallies and the Washington Capitals completed the franchise's first season sweep of the Flyers with a 6-2 victory.

Washington outscored Philadelphia by a lopsided 20-9 in winning all four meetings between the teams this season. It marked the first time in 32 seasons that the Caps won each contest from the Flyers.

The Capitals have won three in a row overall

Clymer got things going with his fifth goal of the season that put Washington ahead for good. Ovechkin made it 2-0 just over six minutes later and he added his 28th goal of the season early in the second period to extend the lead to 3-0.

Voted an Eastern Conference All Star starter Tuesday night, Ovechkin was not overly impressed with the sweep of Philadelphia.

"We just play our system and it's working," Ovechkin said. "I just look to win the next game. Right now, we beat the Flyers and it's history. We just try to concentrate on the next game."

Former Philadelphia tough guy Donald Brashear, Alexander Semin and Brian Sutherby also tallied for the Capitals, who start a four-game road trip on Thursday.

"We really have to crank it up and it's good to be headed out on the road with some confidence," Sutherby said. "It's about getting that winning feeling back again and that's always good when you're headed out on the road."

Kyle Calder was the lone bright spot for Philadelphia, recording a pair of goals in the third period with the game already out of reach.

"It was too little too late," Calder said. "We got off to a rough start. It's not a way we want to end a road trip. Hopefully when we get back home we can regroup a little bit and come back."

Robert Esche stopped only 25-of-31 shots for Philadelphia, which has lost four straight and 14 of its last 17 games.

"Our team played terrific today. We were more than capable to win a hockey game," Esche said. "They had a horrific effort from their goalie, and that's all there is to it. We played more than good enough to win the game today, more than enough."

Philadelphia captain Peter Forsberg missed his fourth straight game with a groin injury.
