Comrie, Alfredsson help Senators extend win streak to five

Jan 17, 2007 - 5:08 AM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Mike Comrie, Peter Schaefer and Daniel Alfredsson did their part to make sure the Ottawa Senators kept on rolling.

Comrie scored two goals while Schaefer and Alfredsson each had a goal and an assist as the Senators downed the Washington Capitals, 5-2, for their fifth straight win.

The Senators have outscored their opponents, 30-12, during their win streak.

"We're playing smart," Comrie said. "We're capitalizing on our opportunities. We've got a great team led by some great players and being in a hockey market is a lot of fun. When you win hockey games, it makes the game easier and makes the job of the players a little more fun. We know we have to continue to work hard, because that's the reason we're winning."

"We made a lot of mistakes and we gave them a lot of chances, a lot of opportunities and with a team like that, they're going to score goals," Washington defenseman Brian Potheir said. "Ottawa's a good team. If you give them the puck too much, they're going to score goals. That might have been the case tonight."

Alfredsson, who had a goal and four assists in an 8-3 rout of the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, extended his points streak to five games. The right wing has five goals and nine assists in that span.

"It's nice to score goals, and it's nice to keep winning," said Alfredsson, who has 16 goals and 32 assists this season. "We played hard and we battled throughout the whole game."

Comrie, who had a goal and an assist on Saturday, has three goals in his last four games.

With Washington leading 2-1 in the second period, Alfredsson and Comrie scored 1:07 apart midway through the second period to help Ottawa pull away. Alfredsson scored his 16th of the season when he jammed a rebound past goaltender Brent Johnson for a shorthanded tally.

"The puck hit a crease in the boards and it was right there for me," Alfredsson said. "We've been getting the bounces lately, that's for sure." Defenseman Andrej Meszaros also scored for the Senators while Ray Emery finished with 28 saves in recording his fourth straight victory.

"Emery did a good job when we needed him," Alfredsson said.

Steve Eminger scored his first goal of the season while Chris Clark notched a shorthanded tally for Washington, which lost its third straight.

"We really need a victory any way it'll come," Johnson said. "We need gritty goals, we need a bounce here and there, we need them any way we can get them, and we leave it up to ourselves to get them. There's nothing anyone can say. It's just us that can do it."
