Frolov's overtime goal lifts Kings over Canucks

Jan 27, 2007 - 7:00 AM VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Alexander Frolov got the Los Angeles Kings off to a great start in the second half of the season.

Frolov scored the game-winner in overtime to give the Kings a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

The win snapped Los Angeles' seven-game losing streak, while the Canucks lost for only the second time in their last 13 games.

"We made a lot of mistakes," Vancouver captain Markus Naslund said. "They were a lot sharper. I don't think we had the right mindset tonight. We talked about it. We know they're desperate. We know we have to work hard every night. I don't know if it was the break or what it was, but we have to get back to what we do best."

"We would have taken a win against the Vancouver College boy's team if we had played them," Los Angeles coach Marc Crawford said. "But beating the Canucks, who have played so well here, especially in overtime, where they've been almost unbeatable, it's pretty gratifying."

Frolov netted the winner at 1:48 of the extra session, when he banged in a rebound off defenseman Kevin Dallman's shot from the point past goaltender Roberto Luongo for his 25th tally of the season.

"It's a really great play by Anze (Kopitar) to get in the zone," Frolov said. "He held the puck and just passed it to me down low and it was a really good play by Dallman. I tried to get open, I gave it to him (Dallman) and he got a nice shot on net. I just got the rebound."

The goals snapped a slump for Frolov, who entered with two in his last eight games. Frolov leads the Kings in goals and points with 49.

The left wing gave the Kings a 2-0 lead at 12:26 of the first period, jamming home a rebound from his own shot from the right dot.

Vancouver halved the deficit with 5:47 remaining in the first on Sami Salo's eighth goal of the season and tied it at 5:54 of the second when Trevor Linden redirected defenseman Kevin Bieksa's pass past netminder Sean Burke.

Linden's goal was his fourth in nine January games after he netted three in 13 December contests.

"You can't take any team lightly in the league, and we addressed that before the game," Linden said.

Burke, the fifth netminder utilized by the Kings this season, finished with 37 saves and Luongo recorded 40.

The 39-year old Burke, who turns 40 on Monday, was signed by Los Angeles on January 18 after he was placed on waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"I felt pretty good tonight," Burke said. "I had a good break where I actually skated, and I was able to get my conditioning up a bit. Tomorrow will be a big test, bouncing back for a back-to-back. It's been a while, but I felt pretty strong tonight."

Burke allowed one goal in 43 minutes in a 3-2 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday before leaving the game due to dehydration.

"Burkie played really good for us," Frolov said. "He made a lot of really good saves, and it sort of gets us going."
