Lecavalier, St. Louis score again as Lightning blank Hurricanes

Feb 2, 2007 - 5:43 AM RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- With hopes of continuing their record pace away from home, the Tampa Bay Lightning looked no further than two of the NHL's top goal scorers.

Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis each scored their 32nd goal and Johan Holmqvist made 31 saves as the Lightning extended their franchise-record road winning streak to seven games with a 4-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Lecavalier and St. Louis entered the contest one goal behind league leader Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who netted his 33rd in Thursday's loss to Florida. But after Ryan Craig scored on the power play in the first period and defenseman Doug Janik tallied with 37 seconds remaining in the second, the All-Star teammates did their best to remain just one goal off the pace.

Just 2:49 into the final period, Lecavalier took a cross-ice pass from Ruslan Fedotenko and slapped the puck past former Tampa Bay goaltender John Grahame for a 3-0 advantage.

Midway through the session, Lecavalier received a feed from Brad Richards during a power play and found St. Louis, who wristed a shot between the pads of Grahame for a 4-0 bulge.

"I just saw St. Louis at the last second, and when Martin is alone in front of the net, there is a good chance he's going to score," Lecavalier said. "I just tried to get it towards him and he just put it in."

"We got two big goals on the power play, and that's the way you win games in this league," St. Louis said. "We were able to kill some penalties in the first period and then go on the power play and get some goals."

It was St. Louis' league-leading 20th road goal and 70th point of the campaign. The assist gave Lecavalier, who played in his 600th career game, 68 points on the season.

"It feels great to get to 600 games," Lecavalier said. "It''s been a nice time in Tampa. Starting off, the first three or four years were tough. But winning the (Stanley) Cup, we're a great hockey club. I definitely want to play a lot longer here."

Holmqvist made 11 saves in the first period and 10 in each of the final two sessions en route to his first career shutout and sixth win in his last seven starts.

"It was a big win because we knew it was going to be a tough game for us," Holmqvist said. "It was good for me."

"Our goalie Holmqvist kept us in the game early and made some key saves," Lecavalier said.

Vaclav Prospal added a pair of assists for the Lightning, who evened the season series against the Hurricanes at three wins apiece.

Grahame stopped 16 shots for Carolina, which has lost five of six overall and five of its last six contests here.

"Everybody is frustrated," Grahame said. "We're not really sure what to do. "We're playing hard, but you've also got to play smart as well."
