Shanahan faces former teams as Rangers host Red Wings

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Brendan Shanahan is not used to playing against the Detroit Red Wings.

Playing against his old team for the first time, Shanahan and the New York Rangers will face off with the Red Wings on Monday.

A member of three Stanley Cup-winning teams in nine seasons with Detroit, Shanahan left for New York, signing a one-year contract with the Rangers in the offseason.

In 2005-06, Shanahan had one of his best seasons, scoring 40 goals to lead the Red Wings to the President's Trophy for notching the best regular-season record.

However, Shanahan capitalized on the stellar campaign by signing a $4 million deal with New York, and it has paid off. Starting off with tallies in 12 of his first 13 contests with his new team, Shanahan has continued to play well, scoring 26 goals this campaign.

The Rangers were defeated, 3-2, by Tampa Bay on Saturday. Jason Krog tallied and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 38 shots for New York, which has lost four of its last six contests.

On Friday, the Red Wings posted their 10th straight home win, a 5-3 triumph over St. Louis.

Tomas Holmstrom, Henrik Zetterberg and All-Star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom combined for three goals and seven assists and Kris Draper netted the winning goal shorthanded tally.

Monday's contest marks the first matchup between the teams at Madison Square Garden since October 25, 2003.
