Zetterberg's goal lifts Red Wings past Rangers

Feb 6, 2007 - 4:24 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Henrik Zetterberg capped a three-goal third-period rally with a tally to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 triumph over the New York Rangers.

The victory was Detroit's fourth straight and it was the ninth time this season it had rallied from a third-period deficit to win.

New York is 3-7-0 in its last 10 games.

"It was a really tough loss," New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said. "We battled hard and played smart the whole game, but in the end they found a way to win. They got a rebound here and there. I thought we played a good game, but it wasn't good enough."

"We've got veteran people in the room, and let's just get playing," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "If we get playing, we've got a good enough team and our back end is mobile enough, we can put a lot of pressure on you. When you're up in the game and suddenly the game gets tighter, so does the other team and that's what happened. We took over the game, let's be honest."

Zetterberg scored the game-winner on the power play when he picked up a loose puck, circled in front of the net and blasted a shot past Lundqvist at 12:46.

"We were in their zone for a bit and the puck came out, and I just turned around and went over Lundqvist," Zetterberg said. "It was kind of lucky that the puck just happened to get on my stick and I turned around and shot it."

The Red Wings trailed, 3-1, entering the third period before Jiri Hudler scored at 2:31 and Robert Lang jammed a rebound past Lundqvist at 10:54.

Pavel Datsyuk also scored and Dominik Hasek made 17 saves for Detroit.

"It was disappointing for me," Hasek said. "However, we found a way to win. When you are down by two goals before the third period, and we then score three goals and win the game, it is very exciting and good for the confidence of the team."

"As tough as it was on Dom early, he was that good late," Babcock said. "It was like two games for him. Dom shut the door late."

Brendan Shanahan, Michael Nylander and Marcel Hossa scored for the Rangers. Lundqvist made 22 saves.

"Our system was dead on," New York defenseman Aaron Ward said. "They (Detroit) had one goal and shots were down. I don't know exactly what happened out there. It's not anything like a lack of preparation coming out of the locker room between the second and third. I'm not sure exactly what happened."

Lundqvist is 2-5-0 in his last seven games with 14 goals allowed.

Shanahan, playing his first game against the Red Wings after signing as a free agent with the Rangers this summer, gave New York a 1-0 lead at 2:18 of the first period when he fired a shot from the right faceoff dot over the shoulder of Hasek.
