Boyes, Oshie lead Blues to shootout win

Dec 24, 2009 - 6:55 AM CALGARY, Alberta(AP) -- Chris Mason was sticking around for a few extra days after helping the St. Louis Blues sweep a three-game trip to Western Canada.

"I'm pretty happy that I'm going to be going home for Christmas, it's the first time in a lot of years," said Mason, headed 90 miles north to his hometown of Red Deer.

"I had some family here tonight as well as watching the game back home. It's going to be a nice Christmas."

Mason made 23 saves and turned aside two shootout attempts, and Brad Boyes and T.J. Oshie beat Miikka Kiprusoff in the tiebreaker to give St. Louis a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.

"In these last few games, when we put our mind to it and play the way we're supposed to play, we've seen how we're successful," Mason said. "These three games in a row have probably been three of our best games of the season."

Patrik Berglund scored for St. Louis - coming off victories in Vancouver and Edmonton - in the second period, and Mark Giordano tied it for Calgary with 7:42 left in regulation.

St. Louis (17-14-5) has won six of its last seven road games and is 11-3-3 away from home this season.

"We've been playing bad at home and we said to each other, `We have to do something, this is not good enough."' Bergland said. "So, we went on this road trip with a whole new attitude."

Boyes put the Blues ahead in the second round of the shootout with a deke move, squeezing the puck inside the goal post behind Kiprusoff.

After Olli Jokinen hit the goal post on the Flames' second attempt, Oshie snapped a shot through Kiprusoff's pads to end the tiebreaker.

Bergland scored after Blues defenseman Mike Weaver directed a shot off the end boards that caromed sharply to Berglund in the slot.

"The boards are real hard here and we knew about that, so he put it off the boards and there was a lot of traffic in front of the net and it bounced right out to me and I had an open net," Berglund said.

Calgary (20-11-5) is 1-3-2 in its last six games.

"Unfortunately, when it goes to a shootout like that, anything can happen," Giordano said. "We had a good effort tonight, definitely a step in the right direction, but we need to start getting some wins."

NOTES: Calgary D Jay Bouwmeester broke two sticks on the same penalty kill. After Bouwmeester's own stick broke while blocking a shot, Daymond Langkow gave him his stick and seconds later it also ended up broken, the result of another blocked shot. ... St. Louis D Eric Brewer (back) was in the lineup after missing 13 games. The return of the Blues captain knocked veteran D Darryl Sydor to the press box.
