Raymond has hat trick in Canucks' victory
Dec 28, 2009 - 5:44 AM CALGARY, Alberta(AP) -- Mason Raymond made himself right at home in the Saddledome. From nearby Cochrane, Raymond scored three times in a 14:15 span for a natural hat trick in the Vancouver Canucks' 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Sunday night.
"It's always fun to do it in front of friends and family," Raymond said. "I grew up watching Calgary so you always remember coming to this rink and doing things here so that's exciting. This one will be one I'll remember for sure."
Raymond scored twice in a 34-second span late in the first period to give Calgary a 4-1 lead, and completed his first career hat trick on a power play at 12:31 of the second. The 24-year-old left winger has a career-high 17 goals this season.
Henrik Sedin and Kyle Wellwood also scored, and Roberto Luongo made 29 saves for the Canucks, coming off a 4-1 victory over Edmonton on Saturday night - their sixth win on an eight-game homestand.
Jarome Iginla scored his 20th goal for Calgary. The Flames, playing for the first time since a shootout loss to St. Louis on Wednesday night, are 1-4-2 in their last seven games.
"You never want to say that as a team you got outcompeted and outworked and we did tonight," Iginla said. "They came back and got two quick ones, but even at 2-1, even 3-1, we can't let that happen at home in the first period. We, as players, it's not good enough at home, it's not good enough anywhere. We're definitely embarrassed."
Miikka Kiprusoff was pulled after allowing four goals on 13 shots in the first period. Curtis McElhinney made 15 saves in the final two periods.
The Flames' dressing room remained closed for an extended time after the game.
"I have a few concerns that are certainly very noticeable and you can't hide it," coach Brent Sutter said. "It's got absolutely nothing to do with systems, absolutely nothing. It's other things that we have to deal with and we're going to. Whether it's liked or not, it's going to be dealt with."
NOTES: Vancouver moved past Calgary for seventh place in the Western Conference. ... Sedin has scored in three straight games and has points in 12 of his last 13.
