Kings keep winning after break, 5-1 over Stars

Mar 3, 2010 - 5:21 AM By STEPHEN HAWKINS AP Sports Writer

DALLAS(AP) -- That 16-day break between games apparently had no effect on Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings.

They just keep winning.

Quick stopped 31 shots, Alexander Frolov had a goal and two assists and the Kings beat the Dallas Stars 5-1 on Tuesday night to improve to 11-1-1 in their last 13 games.

"You get back to the rink and get into your routine and everything starts to feel natural," said Quick, who didn't see any action for the U.S. Olympic team as one of Ryan Miller's backups. "I caught a couple of lucky breaks and got a lot of support from my team."

Jarret Stoll, Brad Richardson, Ryan Smyth and Anze Kopitar also had goals for the Kings.

Dallas, which was 3-0-1 in its last four games before the Olympic break, managed only a power-play goal against Quick, who improved to 11-1 in his last 12 games and set a Kings record with his 36th win of the season.

Drew Doughty, who played for Canada's gold medal-winning team, had three primary assists for Los Angeles.

"I felt good out there. My job was to lead by example. Guys have been off for a while. So I did all I could to get off to a good start," Doughty said. "Quicker's been a big part of our success. We're sticking to the system, keeping it simple and playing well defensively."

The Stars were denied their first three-game winning streak of the season after moving within a point of eighth place in the Western Conference before the Olympic break.

"We could have done everything much better. We were just flat," said Mike Ribeiro, whose goal between Quick's legs with 14:41 left came after Los Angeles built a 4-0 cushion.

Marty Turco had 17 saves in his 500th game for Dallas, becoming the 57th goalie to appear in 500 games - and only the fifth in that group to make all of his NHL appearances with one team.

Turco, who is in the last year of his contract and might not be re-signed by the Stars, was 4-1-1 with a 1.15 goals-against average and .967 save percentage in his last six games before the Olympic break.

"It's really disappointing to lose a game like that," Stephane Robidas said. "There's nothing we can do about it now."

Quick and Turco both had assists, marking the first NHL game that both goalies had an assist since March 23, 2006, when New Jersey's Martin Brodeur and Atlanta's Kari Lehtonen - now with Dallas, and possibly Turco's eventual replacement - did it.

Los Angeles went ahead 1-0 less than six minutes into the game when Frolov skated behind the net and poked a centering pass to Stoll for his 13th goal of the season.

Early in the second period, Frolov scored his 14th goal when he got a rebound and waited a split-second before flipping a backhander past Turco.

"We needed this kind of game coming off the break," Frolov said.

The last two Kings goals came on the power play. Kopitar scored with 6.3 seconds left in the game for his 29th goal - two more than he had last season.

Los Angeles has won eight of its last nine road games.

"I liked our start to the game. The first period was what you'd like to see after a two-week break," Kings coach Terry Murray said. "Overall I liked our effort. The effort, the concentration was good."

NOTES: Ribeiro has four goals in four games since missing 15 games after being struck in the throat by a stick Jan. 6 against the Rangers. Ribeiro spent several days in a New York hospital after undergoing a tracheotomy. ... The Kings have won all four games against Dallas this season. ... Olympic medal winners from both teams were recognized on the ice before the game, including two members of Canada's gold medal team: Doughty and Stars captain Brenden Morrow. Kings players Dustin Brown, Jack Johnson and Quick were on the U.S. team, and Stars forward Jere Lehtinen was a member of Finland's bronze medal team. ... Brodeur has played the most games in goal for one team, appearing in his 1,058th for New Jersey on Tuesday night.
