Calder contributes, Holmstrom stays hot as Red Wings top Blackhawks

Feb 28, 2007 - 6:18 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Kyle Calder and Tomas Holmstrom helped the Detroit Red Wings snap out of their recent slide - a game against the Chicago Blackhawks didn't hurt either.

Calder immediately made a positive impression on his new teammates and Holmstrom extended his goal-scoring streak to three games as the Red Wings posted a 4-1 victory over the Blackhawks.

The Red Wings were coming off two straight losses but Calder got them going in the right direction early on in the first game of a home-and-home series. The rematch between the long-time rivals is Friday in Detroit.

Calder came streaking into the slot and slammed home a centering pass by Johan Franzen from behind the net just 1:46 into the contest.

"It's not a bad way to start at all," Calder said. "I just jumped out on the ice, went down low and the puck came right at me. I was able to put it in. It's nice to get it out of the way. You just keep working hard and that's what gets you your success. For myself, it's hard work. I just keep working hard."

On Monday, the Red Wings and Blackhawks were involved in a three-way trade with the Philadelphia Flyers. Chicago acquired left wing Calder for defenseman Lasse Kukkonen and a 2007 third-round pick, then moved Calder to Detroit for center Jason Williams.

Holmstrom and Franzen scored in the second period Detroit took a 4-0 lead when Holmstrom tallied again in the third period for his fifth multi-goal game this season.

"I think we came out with some jump and getting the first goal helped us a lot," Holmstrom said. "We still had to play tight after that, but it was a pretty solid game from all of our lines and Dominik (Hasek) played great."

Jeff Hamilton scored with one minute to play for Chicago, which is 0-5-0 against Detroit this season and has dropped seven straight at home to the Red Wings.

Chicago's leading scorer, Martin Havlat, sat out the game with the flu while injuries sidelined Detroit's top scorer Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary.

"He was really sick last night, it has been coming on," Chicago coach Denis Savard said. "He has no strength at all there was no way he could play."

Williams took three shots in his first game with Chicago and was happy to get the meeting against his old team out of the way.

"Obviously good to get this one out of the way," Williams said. "But since we have have them again Friday in Detroit I hope we can go take the two points back from them. This way each side has two points after the trade.

"They mostly were wishing me good luck and I did the same to them. I am looking forward to being here and being a go to guy."
