Sharks end four-game losing streak, beat Stars
Mar 5, 2007 - 12:36 AM DALLAS (Ticker) -- The San Jose Sharks' slow start failed to mean much.Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves as the Sharks stopped a four-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over the Dallas Stars.
Entering the contest in the midst of their longest slide of the season, the Sharks started slowly, managing just one shot in the first period.
However, the Sharks converted the shot into a score when Curtis Brown beat Marty Turco at the 2:38 mark for his eighth goal of the season.
The tally by Brown was more than enough for Nabokov, who made nine saves in the first period, seven in the second and 10 over the final 20 minutes en route to his fifth shutout of the season.
"The first period wasn't our best," Nabokov said. "We responded to the situation in the second and allowed our guys to find their legs."
Nabokov drew praise from coach Ron Wilson.
"That was probably Naby's best game since the Colorado game (a 3-1 win January 15)," Wilson said. "He looked in control back there, and that's a real good sign."
San Jose also got a pair of goals from rookie Joe Pavelski in beating Dallas for the third time in eight games this season.
"I was able to find the net, the puck came to me a couple times and I got a couple goals and it turned into a pretty good night," Pavelski said.
Dallas had been 4-0-3 in its last seven contests to move three points ahead of third-place San Jose in the Pacific Division.
"We certainly didn't play the way we wanted to. They're chasing us in the standings," Stars center Stu Barnes said. "We knew they were going to play hard and they did and they took advantage of use."
Ryane Clowe beat Turco with a backhander at 11:27 of the second period for his 14th goal, giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead.
Just over four minutes later, Pavelski tallied his 13th goal off a scramble in front. He completed his second multi-goal game of the campaign with under two minutes left.
"I thought our first period was pretty good and we were controlling play," Turco said. "Even though we had more shots and had some positive things, we were embarrassed in a game we really wanted. We always thing about how we can be better, but to come out and play in an embarrassing way against those against those guys is very frustrating."
