Preds net SO victory, halt Blues' home win streak
Nov 12, 2010 - 6:14 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Marcel Goc scored the decisive goal in the fourth round of the shootout, lifting the Nashville Predators to a 3-2 win and handing the St. Louis Blues their first home loss of the season. After Patrik Berglund, the fourth shooter for the Blues, was turned away by Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne, Goc slid the puck inside the left post and past the outstretched pad of St. Louis' Jaroslav Halak to snap the Predators' five-game losing streak.
J-P Dumont tied the game with 6:52 remaining in the third period for Nashville, which has won five straight games at Scottrade Center. Rinne finished with 21 saves.
"When you're losing games you start second-guessing yourself," said Rinne. "You start thinking everything you do is wrong so it's huge for us to snap that streak."
Matt D'Agostini and David Backes scored in regulation for the Blues, who had a seven-game winning streak snapped with an 8-1 loss Wednesday in Columbus. Halak stopped 24 shots.
"Right now teams are coming after us hard," said St. Louis head coach Davis Payne. "Until we break that with firm plays and clean decisions they're gonna keep coming at us."
St. Louis had begun the year 6-0 at home and reeled off a franchise-best 12 straight home victories dating back to a 3-2 loss to Nashville on March 21.
D'Agostini took a pass from Berglund, streaked down the left wing and fired a wrister between the pads of Rinne to give St. Louis a 2-1 lead at 5:54 of the third period.
Dumont collected a carom off the end boards and beat Halak on the backhand to draw Nashville even.
The Blues failed to capitalize on a power play late in overtime.
Backes beat a diving Rinne with a shot from the right circle to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead with 1:38 remaining in the first period. Cal O'Reilly countered for the Predators at 13:44 of the second stanza.
