Iginla's hat trick sparks Calgary past Chicago
Nov 20, 2010 - 9:08 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jarome Iginla recorded his 11th career hat trick and Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside 31 shots to lead Calgary past Chicago, 7-2, at Scotiabank Saddledome.David Moss added a goal and two assists and Alex Tanguay had three helpers for the Flames, who ended an eight-game losing streak to Chicago and beat the defending Stanley Cup champions for the first time since March 16, 2008.
Niklas Hagman, Curtis Glencross and Brendan Morrison supplied a goal and an assist as the Flames topped the Blackhawks on home ice for the first time since November 22, 2006.
"This is certainly a big win for us," Calgary head coach Brent Sutter said. "We'll enjoy this one tonight and start to get ready for our next game because they're coming very quickly."
Jack Skille and Troy Brouwer potted the goals for the Blackhawks, who have dropped four of their last six games. Marty Turco, coming off a shutout win over Edmonton on Wednesday, took the loss after yielding seven goals on 36 shots.
Chicago got the scoring started 6:12 into the game on a Skille wrist shot that beat Kiprusoff. However, the Flames responded 2:40 later on a Hagman slapshot that whistled past Turco to tie the game.
Calgary grabbed the lead for good 12:28 into the opening stanza on a power play tally by Moss before Iginla left his imprint on the game during the second period.
The Flames captain finished a 3-on-2 with a wrister from the slot that beat Turco through the five-hole to make it 3-1 midway through the session and then redirected a Tanguay redirection of a Moss point shot with 1:18 left in the period to push the lead to three.
The hosts then broke things open with three goals in a span of 2 1/2 minutes in the final stages of the game.
Glencross was stopped on a breakaway but Morrison was there to deposit the rebound past Turco at 16:29. Iginla intercepted an attempted clearing pass inside the blue line and ripped a slapshot from the top of the right circle past Turco with 1:50 remaining before Glencross finished the scoring with a wrister from the top of the right circle with 59 ticks to go.
Brouwer's goal that was upheld by review capped the scoring with 20 seconds to play.
"Calgary played well, they played hard, but we weren't up to par," Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville said. "It was one of those games where there's nothing to be happy about."
