Oilers snap losing streak to Senators

Nov 30, 2010 - 4:31 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Andrew Cogliano and Gilbert Brule both tallied in the third period to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place.

Tom Gilbert supplied a power-play goal for the Oilers, who snapped a six-game losing streak to the Senators that dated to March 14, 2004. Martin Gerber turned away 22 shots to notch his second win in as many starts with Edmonton.

Nick Foligno scored the lone goal for Ottawa, which has dropped three of its last four games. Brian Elliott made 21 saves in defeat.

Cogliano tipped a Brule shot behind Elliott to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at the 4:19 mark of the third period. Cogliano then fed Brule for an easy tap-in to make it 3-1 at 12:48.

Rookie Taylor Hall added an empty-net goal for Edmonton with 1:55 left in regulation.

"Andrew (Cogliano) has played very well for us this year from start to finish at this point in time. My hope is that the trend continues," Edmonton head coach Tom Renney said.

The Senators grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:30 mark of the first period. Gerber made a left pad save on a bid from Foligno, but the rebound caromed in off the skate of Edmonton defenseman Ladislav Smid.

"We came out strong in the first (period) and had several opportunities to extend the lead," said Ottawa head coach Cory Clouston. "After the first intermission, we just came out flat and took them lightly. They picked up their game. We didn't respect our opponent. We didn't play the way we needed to play."

Gilbert tied the game with 1:21 remaining in the middle frame, taking a Sam Gagner pass and letting go a slap shot from the top of the left circle.

Game Notes

Oilers winger Ales Hemsky missed his third straight game with a groin injury...Dustin Penner had two assists for Edmonton...The Oilers won in Ottawa for the first time since March 14, 2002.
