Devils, Hurricanes clash at the Rock

Oct 10, 2011 - 2:54 PM (Sports Network) - The Devils and Hurricanes will both be after their first victories of the season when the clubs meet this afternoon at New Jersey's Prudential Center.

The Hurricanes are 0-1-1 on the year, while the Devils were dealt a shutout loss by Philadelphia in their season and home opener on Saturday. New Jersey is beginning the year on a three-game homestand that will wrap up Thursday against Los Angeles.

The Devils were dealt a 3-0 loss by the Flyers on Saturday, as Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 20 shots sent his way.

Martin Brodeur allowed three goals on 29 shots as the Devils started a season with a new head coach for the third straight year, losing in Peter DeBoer's debut.

"They looked (to be) at game speed and we looked at practice speed," said the new head coach. "And we never caught up."

The Devils are trying to avoid another bad start to a season. New Jersey lost its first three games last year and wound up posting just 10 wins in the first 41 games.

Meanwhile, Carolina has surrendered nine goals over its first two games, but the 'Canes were able to pick up a point in Saturday's overtime loss in Washington. Mike Green scored with 2:36 remaining in the extra session to lift the Capitals to a 4-3 decision.

Jussi Jokinen scored for the Hurricanes with 1:19 remaining in the third period to force overtime. Eric Staal added a pair of goals, while Brian Boucher had 32 saves.

"It was one of those games that could've gone our way but it didn't," said Boucher. "We'll just have to regroup."

Although Jokinen was the hero for the Hurricanes in regulation, he proved a detriment in overtime, leaving his team short-handed with a holding penalty. Green took advantage, beating Boucher with a wide-open slap shot during the power play to notch the game-winner.

Saturday's tilt began a stretch of six road games in seven outings for the Hurricanes. Carolina will return home briefly for Wednesday's game against Boston before heading out on a four-game swing.

The Devils have won three straight, four out of five and seven of the last nine encounters with Carolina. The Hurricanes have also dropped five in a row and seven of their last eight in the Garden State.
