Lindstrom, Avalanche bury Senators 7-1

Oct 14, 2011 - 3:58 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Joakim Lindstrom notched two goals as the Colorado Avalanche routed the Ottawa Senators, 7-1.

"I think the guys did everything they could tonight to play up to their capabilities," Colorado head coach Joe Sacco said. "We had a good group effort tonight."

Daniel Winnik and David Jones each had a goal while Matt Duchene, Milan Hejduk and Gabriel Landeskog each had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who won their third straight game after dropping their season opener against the Red Wings.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 15-of-16 shots for Colorado.

"We're early in the year, a lot of new guys playing together and you hope that there were some lessons learned, and move forward," Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips said.

Milan Michalek netted the lone goal, while Craig Anderson allowed seven goals on 39 shots for Ottawa, which has dropped three of four to open the season.

The Senators scored a quick power play goal, just 4:05 into the contest, when Michalek tipped in an Erik Karlsson slap shot from the right point.

The Avalanche answered with a power-play goal of their own just three minutes later when Hejduk found a rolling puck and wristed it home from inside the left circle.

After Ryan O'Reilly forced an Ottawa turnover from behind its own net, he found an open Landeskog lurking in front of the goal with a backhand. Landeskog jammed it past Anderson to make it 2-1 at the 8:25 mark of the first.

Ryan Wilson sent a back-footed wrister on net, which took a high bounce off the skate of Ottawa's David Runblad. Lindstrom pounced on the puck in the crease and lifted the disc past Anderson's stick to make it 3-1 with less than three minutes left in the second.

Colorado scored four goals in the final period to put the game away.

On the power play, Duchene found a loose puck in the slot, deked a few times, and put it away with the forehand less than two minutes in.

Winnik tallied a short-handed goal when he intercepted a pass in his own zone, and skated the length of the ice before whistling a wrister from the high slot past Anderson to make it 5-1 at the 4:19 mark.

Jones made it 6-1 with a backhander, while Lindstrom scored his second goal off a one-timer from the right circle. Both were power-play goals.

Colorado outshot Ottawa 18-4 in the first period...Karlsson recorded his sixth assist of the season...Colorado went 4-for-6 on the power play while Ottawa was 1-for-4...The Avs have won five straight in the series.
