Flames use late flurry to edge Oilers
Oct 19, 2011 - 5:15 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Tanguay scored 89 seconds apart late in regulation, and Calgary claimed a 2-1 victory over Edmonton in the first edition of the Battle of Alberta for the 2011-12 campaign.Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 24 shots for the Flames, who had dropped three of four to begin the year.
"It was a hard fought game. It was tight checking and right from the get-go it was a tough game," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said. "We stuck with it and we were able to get a couple down the stretch."
Tom Gilbert picked up the lone score for the Oilers, who got 26 saves in defeat from Devan Dubnyk.
Facing a one-goal deficit with time running out, Calgary finally solved Dubnyk.
First, Bouwmeester managed to sneak his shot between Dubnyk's arm and body from between the circles with 5:57 left in regulation. Then, Tanguay batted a Cory Sarich rebound home from the left side of the crease with 4:28 showing.
Kiprusoff made two quick saves inside the final 15 seconds, but Edmonton gained a power play in the final nine ticks when Mark Giordano was sent off for cross checking.
Calgary won a defensive-zone draw and chipped the puck to the other end of the rink as time expired.
"The bottom line for us was to stay with it and maybe a year ago we would not have been able to do that," Oilers head coach Tom Renney said.
Gilbert's power-play tally, his first goal of the year, gave Edmonton a 1-0 edge at 6:42 of the first period. Dubnyk made 13 saves to keep the Oilers ahead by one.
Kiprusoff then stopped six chances and Dubnyk four in a scoreless second period.
