Hossa returns, sparks Chicago win over Phoenix

Oct 19, 2011 - 5:41 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - It didn't take long for Marian Hossa to get back into the flow.

Hossa, who missed the last game with an upper-body injury, scored the game's first goal then his teammates piled it on, as Chicago downed Phoenix, 5-2.

Jonathan Toews, Jamal Mayers, Dave Bolland and Bryan Bickell also lit the lamp for the Blackhawks, who have won three of four overall. Corey Crawford stopped 14 of the 16 shots he faced.

Taylor Pyatt and Ray Whitney scored for Phoenix, which saw its two-game winning streak come to an end.

Jason LaBarbera was peppered far more than his counterpart, facing just four less shots in the second period than Crawford did on the contest. The Coyotes netminder allowed all five goals on 35 shots.

"Our execution was poor," Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett said. "That wasn't the game I was looking for."

Chicago found plenty of free ice during a 5-on-3 advantage late in the first period. Passing the puck nearly around the rink, Duncan Keith found Patrick Sharp who quickly touched it to Hossa, who was waiting and loaded. His point blank shot flew home with 4:54 remaining.

"Good teams are supposed to score on 5-on-3s," Hossa said.

Phoenix squared the game by shielding Crawford and poking at the loose puck in front of the net. Rostislav Klesla's launch from nearly straight-on was first deflected by David Schlemko and then Pyatt used the backhand to stuff home the equalizer just 42 seconds into the second stanza.

Toews was in the right place at the right time 3:26 into the second, as he cleaned up Andrew Brunette's slap shot for a 2-1 lead. Phoenix equalized at 7:48 on Whitney's third tally of the season, as a lost puck eventually ended up on his stick for a straight-on rocket high and hard over Crawford's glove.

Keith's wrister from out near the blue line was re-directed past LaBarbera by Jamal Mayers. His first goal of the season with 11:24 left in the stanza put the visitors in front, 3-2.

The dagger came short-handed, as Bolland picked Whitney's pocket near the blue line, skated a few feet closer and launched a slap shot past a slow-to-react LaBarbera for a 4-2 game at 2:27 of the third.

Chicago sealed the deal with Bickell's second goal of the season, a wrister 54 ticks short of the midway point in the third stanza.

Game Notes

These two clubs split four meetings last season...Chicago finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while Phoenix missed out on all of its three chances...Phoenix hosts the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, while Chicago travels to Denver on that same day.
