Rangers resume trek in Calgary

Oct 20, 2011 - 3:09 PM (Sports Network) - The Rangers haven't had much success as of late in Western Canada, but Tuesday night's victory could be the start of a win streak.

New York continues its season-opening road trip this evening in Calgary, where it will try to best the Flames for the first time since 2002.

After opening the season with a pair of post-shootout losses in Europe, the Rangers visited the Islanders on Saturday and dropped a two-goal decision. New York then headed out west to battle the Canucks seeking its first victory in Vancouver since Oct. 11, 1997 and came through with a 4-0 victory courtesy of Henrik Lundqvist's 36th career shutout.

Thanks in part of eight Vancouver power plays, Lundqvist was forced to make 40 saves, while the Rangers mustered 19 shots.

"It's been tough not getting any wins in the first couple games, we've been close," Lundqvist said. "I kind of took that as motivation going into this game."

The Rangers almost looked as if they were going to squander their goaltender's performance until exploding for four goals in the final period. Mike Rupp, Ryan McDonagh, Brian Boyle and Marian Gaborik all scored.

"Once we scored a goal it gave us energy, something we had been lacking," said head coach John Tortorella. "We've got some things to work on, even in the third period we've got some things to work on. We found a way. Henry gave us an opportunity and we found a way."

New York snapped a three-game series losing streak to the Flames with a 2-1 home win on Nov. 22 of last year, but has lost its last two trips to Calgary since its previous win there on Nov. 14, 2002.

Calgary continues a six-game homestand this evening and began the residency with a 2-1 victory over Edmonton. Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Tanguay scored 89 seconds apart late in regulation to help the Flames win the first edition of the Battle of Alberta.

Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 24 shots for the Flames, who had dropped three of four to begin the year.

"It was a hard fought game. It was tight checking and right from the get-go it was a tough game," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said. "We stuck with it and we were able to get a couple down the stretch."

Brendan Morrison suited up for the Flames for the first time since suffering a knee injury back on March 2.
