Flyers welcome Blues to Philly
Oct 22, 2011 - 3:34 PM (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers will try to bounce back from their first regulation loss of the season when they host the St. Louis Blues in tonight's battle at the Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers had a 4-0-1 record entering Thursday's showdown with visiting Washington, but the Capitals slammed Philadelphia, 5-2, to improve their record to 6-0 on the season. Philadelphia has lost two of its last three games after beginning the season with a 3-0 mark.
Philadelphia was burned by two Alex Ovechkin goals on Thursday, as Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 23-of-28 shots in defeat. Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier scored for the Flyers.
The loss overshadowed forward Brayden Schenn's Philadelphia debut. The 20- year-old, who was recalled from the AHL on Wednesday, came to the Flyers this summer in the trade that sent Mike Richards to the Kings.
"Not the result the team was looking for but we had a real good second period and didn't have the start in the third period," Schenn said.
The Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen was also forced to leave Thursday's game after blocking a Mike Green slapshot with his right arm. The veteran did skate on Friday, but he is questionable for tonight's contest.
Tonight's tilt marks the second segment of a three-game homestand for the Flyers, who are 1-1-1 in the City of Brotherly Love this season. Philly will complete the residency Monday against Toronto.
The Blues, meanwhile, notched their third win in seven games this season with Friday's overtime victory against visiting Carolina. Matt D'Agostini scored the game-winning goal in OT, sending St. Louis to the 3-2 victory over the Hurricanes.
With about a minute to go in the extra session, the Blues won a key offensive zone faceoff and the puck made its way to Vladimir Sobotka in the right corner. Sobotka found D'Agostini standing alone in front and the winger one- timed it in behind Cam Ward at 3:58 of the overtime period.
"We felt that if we kept at it, kept getting pressure in the blue paint, we'd get what we needed," Blues head coach Davis Payne said.
Blues captain David Backes and veteran forward Jason Arnott scored, while Brian Elliott made 27 saves for the Blues, who snapped a two-game skid.
It's unclear if Elliott or struggling No. 1 netminder Jaroslav Halak will get the start tonight. Halak started Tuesday's 5-0 loss in Los Angeles and was pulled after allowing four goals on 18 shots through two periods. The 26-year- old Czech native is 4-2-0 with a 2.27 goals-against average in his career against Philadelphia.
Although the Flyers have five wins in the last seven meetings against St. Louis, the Blues have taken two of the previous three encounters in this series. St. Louis has dropped two straight and six of its last seven games in Philadelphia.
