Red Wings shut out Ducks

Nov 6, 2011 - 3:50 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Nicklas Lidstrom had two goals and an assist to back Jimmy Howard's second shutout of the season, as the Detroit Red Wings snapped a six-game skid with a 5-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

Howard made 22 saves for the Red Wings, who won for the first time since October 21st.

"The guys did a great job. We knew it was upon us," Howard said. "We knew the talent was in this dressing room to get it done. I was just going out there and working hard for them for the full 60 minutes."

Johan Franzen had a goal and two assists for Detroit. Niklas Kronwall and Henrik Zetterberg also lit the lamp.

Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller turned aside 40-of-45 shots before being pulled in the third period. Dan Ellis made five saves in relief for Anaheim, which has lost five in a row.

"We just didn't have a starting point for our hockey club," Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said. "We couldn't make a tape-to-tape pass."

Kronwall's slapper from the right point at the 7:04 mark of the first period gave Detroit a 1-0 lead.

The Red Wings made it 2-0 at the 1:55 mark of the second stanza. Franzen slid a nice pass to Zetterberg in the slot, and the latter beat Hiller with a snap shot.

Lidstrom gave Detroit a three-goal cushion just 50 seconds later. Lidstrom's slapper from the top of the left circle beat Hiller.

A power-play goal from Lidstrom at the 1:39 mark of the third made it 4-0. Lidstrom's slapper from the point beat traffic in front and got past Hiller.

Franzen's backhander at the 10:37 mark accounted for the final margin.

Game Notes

Detroit has won seven straight and 16 of its last 17 home games against the Ducks...The Red Wings recalled forward Fabian Brunnstrom from Grand Rapids (AHL) to replace forward Todd Bertuzzi, who missed the game with flu-like symptoms. Brunnstrom had an assist...Howard posted his seventh career shutout...Anaheim recalled forward Peter Holland from Syracuse (AHL). Holland made his NHL debut on Saturday...Anaheim went 1-3-3 on a seven-game road trip.
