Franzen records hat trick as Red Wings down Avalanche

Nov 9, 2011 - 4:26 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Johan Franzen recorded a hat trick, and the rebounding Detroit Red Wings beat the slumping Colorado Avalanche, 5-2, at Joe Louis Arena.

Nicklas Lidstrom and Danny Cleary also tallied for the Red Wings, who got 24 saves from Jimmy Howard.

Detroit has won two games in a row after an 0-5-1 skid.

"I think we played good defense and created chances tonight," Franzen said.

Rookie Gabriel Landeskog and Milan Hejduk each had a power-play goal for Colorado, which suffered its fourth straight loss and sixth in seven games overall.

Semyon Varlamov was pulled after yielding three goals on 16 shots. Jean- Sebastien Giguere made 12 saves in relief.

Lidstrom jumped on a loose puck between the circles and beat Varlamov on the blocker side 8:54 into the contest.

Franzen tallied twice on the man-advantage in a span of 4:17 during the second period, extending Detroit's lead to 3-0.

After getting the blade of his stick on Valtteri Filppula's one-timer, Franzen scored another on redirection, tipping Niklas Kronwall's feed from the left point at 6:53 and sending Varlamov to the bench.

"My job at that point is just to try to limit the damage and hopefully a goalie change will motivate the guys," Giguere said. "I thought after that we had a little bit more jump in our game, and it wasn't enough."

Less than two minutes later, Landeskog, the second player taken in the 2011 draft, netted his first career power-play goal -- hammering away at the right post -- to put Colorado on the board.

In the third period, Cleary and Hejduk traded goals before Franzen hit an empty net inside the final minute.

Cleary became the 43rd player to score 100 goals as a Red Wing...Avalanche defenseman Kyle Quincey played in his 200th career game.
