Sabres best Canadiens in shootout

Nov 15, 2011 - 4:07 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Brad Boyes scored the game-winning goal in the second round of a shootout, sending the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens from Bell Centre.

Boyes rushed up the ice slowly and used a backhand-forehand deke to fake out Carey Price before sliding the puck into an open net for the winner.

Derek Roy and Jason Pominville scored the regulation goals for the Sabres, who got 25 saves from Jhonas Enroth, filling in for an injured Ryan Miller in net.

"We proved we're a pretty resilient bunch," Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said. "We had some opportunities that they blocked and there was a little frustration there. But my mindset was to go down to three [lines] in the third period, and we moved Roy up to Pominville's line and it worked."

Max Pacioretty had a goal and an assist and Erik Cole scored for the Canadiens, who got 30 saves from Price in defeat.

Buffalo had a golden opportunity to win the game in the overtime period when Cole was whistled for goaltender interference just 19 seconds in, but Price stood tall and kept the puck out of the net.

Montreal got its own power play chance in overtime when Thomas Vanek was called for tripping, but the Sabres' defense did a good job blocking shots and keeping pucks from getting to Enroth.

After a scoreless first period, Montreal took the lead at 3:58 of the second stanza thanks to some good work in the offensive zone on the power play. After the Sabres failed to clear the zone, P.K. Subban picked up a loose puck in front of the net and fed it to Cole, who one-timed it past Enroth from the right circle for the 1-0 lead.

The Canadiens expanded their lead to 2-0 at 14:17 of the second period when David Desharnais brought the puck into the offensive zone on the right wing and fed a puck to the front of the net for Pacioretty, who batted at the puck and it trickled into the far side past Enroth.

Buffalo made it a one-goal game just 53 seconds into the third period with aggressive play on the forecheck. A dumped puck behind the net found Roy, who spun around and found Pominville, who slapped it past Price from the slot to make it 2-1.

The Sabres knotted the game at two at 12:30 of the third thanks to a terrific individual effort by Roy, who picked up a loose puck in the slot after getting knocked down and wristed a quick shot high to the stick side.

Game Notes

Sabres second-year defenseman Tyler Myers was a healthy scratch for the first time in his career...It was the Canadiens' third consecutive overtime game...Montreal finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while Buffalo was 0-for-4 with the man advantage...The Sabres will welcome the New Jersey Devils to First Niagara Center on Wednesday, while the Canadiens will face Carolina at home, also on Wednesday.
