Flyers take on the Jets in Winnipeg

Nov 19, 2011 - 4:20 PM (Sports Network) - The Flyers and Jets combined for 17 goals when they met for a game last month in Philadelphia. Today, the clubs will clash for the first time since that wild contest, as the Flyers visit Winnipeg for a battle at the MTS Centre.

The Jets posted a 9-8 victory over the Flyers on Oct. 27, as nine different players scored for Winnipeg, which blew a pair of four-goal leads in the NHL's highest-scoring contest of the season.

The Winnipeg franchise, which was located in Atlanta until this season, has taken four straight and eight of the last nine encounters with the Flyers. This marks Philadelphia's first game in Winnipeg since March 22. 1996.

Both the Flyers and the Jets enter today riding small winning streaks, as Philadelphia has taken three in a row for the first time since the opening week of the season and Winnipeg has recorded consecutive victories for just the second time this year.

Philadelphia has notched recent wins over Florida, Carolina and Phoenix to match the club's longest winning streak of the year. The Flyers also won three in a row from Oct. 6-12 and Peter Laviolette's team last claimed four straight from Jan. 14-20 of last season.

With a 2-1 regulation win over Phoenix on Thursday, the Flyers have recorded a point in eight straight games and are 6-0-2 in those tilts. Philly edged the Coyotes thanks to rookie Matt Read's game-winner with 18.6 seconds left in the third period. Ilya Bryzgalov also made 30 saves against his former team to help lift the Flyers past Phoenix.

With time winding down in regulation, Jakub Voracek held the puck at the left boards and fired a shot on net that Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith stopped. The rebound, though, when to Maxime Talbot at the right side and he slipped it back over to Read for the easy slam.

"Just being in the right spot at the right time, I guess," said Read, who has six goals and five assists in 15 games this season.

James van Riemsdyk scored the other goal for the Flyers, while Voracek extended his point streak to five games with an assist. Philadelphia did lose Jaromir Jagr to a lower body injury in the win and the Czech star is expected to sit out this afternoon. Jagr is considered day-to-day and could be back on the ice when Philly hosts Carolina on Monday.

Bryzgalov didn't start the October meeting against Winnipeg, but he wound up surrendering four goals on 10 shots in that contest. The Russian backstop is 5-0-1 since that appearance and has yielded two goals or less in all six of his starts over that span.

The Flyers boast the best road record in the NHL at 6-1-1 and Philly has earned a point in four straight games (3-0-1) as the visitor.

The Jets, meanwhile, will try to close out a perfect three-game homestand today after recording wins over Tampa Bay and Washington. The only other time Winnipeg has won consecutive games this year was on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 against Florida and the New York Islanders, respectively.

After beating the Lightning by a 5-2 score on Monday, the Jets dismantled another Southeast Division rival on Thursday with a 4-1 decision over the Capitals. Evander Kane scored two goals and Ondrej Pavelec made 31 saves to lift Winnipeg to the easy win.

"We had a lot of heart and a lot of passion and we played really strong," said Jets head coach Claude Noel.

Blake Wheeler and Kyle Wellwood added power-play goals for Winnipeg, which had lost five in a row before posting consecutive wins on home ice. The Jets are 4-3-0 in Winnipeg this season.

Pavelec won the October meeting against Philly despite allowing seven goals on 43 shots. He is 3-1-0 with a 3.92 goals-against average in five career games against the Flyers.

Forward Eric Fehr could make his debut for the Jets tonight after missing the first 19 games of the season following offseason shoulder surgery. Fehr was acquired from Washington on July 8 in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2012 draft and forward Danick Paquette.

Fehr, who was activated from injured reserve on Saturday, had 10 goals and 10 assists while skating in just 52 games for Washington last year.
