Bruins try to extend win streak to 10 against Sabres
Nov 23, 2011 - 3:53 PM (Sports Network) - Boston's gaudy 9-0-0 record in November has enabled the defending Stanley Cup champions to inch closer to the top spot in the Northeast Division standings. The Bruins will look to post their 10th consecutive win tonight against the Buffalo Sabres in the conclusion of a three-game road trip at First Niagara Center.
Goaltender Tim Thomas registered his second straight shutout and third of the season with 33 saves for the Bruins in Monday's 1-0 victory at Montreal. Thomas has posted all three of his shutouts during the recent tear and owns 29 in his career.
"He definitely stoned us tonight," Canadiens goaltender Carey Price said of Thomas, who is on a personal six game winning streak. "He played really well but that's the type of game they've been playing for a while."
Thomas hasn't allowed a goal since Nov. 15 versus New Jersey, pushing his scoreless streak to 133 minutes, 4 seconds.
Andrew Ference scored the only goal of Monday's game late in the first period for the Bruins, who have won three in a row on the road, improved to 4-2-0 as the visitor and sit tied with Buffalo for second place in the Northeast -- two points behind Toronto.
Boston's last loss was on Oct. 29 at Montreal and the team is riding its longest winning streak since ripping off 10 in a row from December 12, 2008 through January 1, 2009. The Bruins have outscored their opponents, 14-0, in the last three road games and the last time they had three straight road shutouts was in January of the 1974 season. The team record is four set during the 1938 campaign.
Defenseman Joe Corvo (lower body) is probable for Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Sabres have lost three of five games since a four-game winning streak and are coming off Saturday's 4-2 loss versus Phoenix at home.
Luke Adam and Patrick Kaleta both scored, while Jordan Leopold added two assists and goaltender Jhonas Enroth made 25 saves in defeat.
"We missed too many opportunities," Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said.
Enroth has been serving as the club's No. 1 netminder with former Vezina Trophy winner Ryan Miller sidelined with a concussion. The Swedish goalie is expected to get a fifth straight start tonight.
Buffalo center Jochen Hecht (concussion) is expected to be activated from injured reserve for Wednesday's game and forward Cody McCormick (upper body) is listed as questionable. Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers had surgery to repair a broken wrist on Monday and will miss the next 4-6 weeks. Kaleta was fined $2,500 for a high sticking call against Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris.
Boston and Buffalo are playing the second of six meetings between the teams tonight and the Bruins took the first matchup by a 1-0 score on Nov. 12 at TD Garden. The Sabres had a four-game winning streak in the series snapped, while Boston owns just three wins in the past 10 trips to upstate New York.
