Ducks try to snap slide against Maple Leafs

Nov 27, 2011 - 3:39 PM (Sports Network) - The Anaheim Ducks hope to avoid their longest losing streak in over six years this evening as they take on a Toronto Maple Leafs club looking for a third consecutive victory.

The Ducks come into this meeting on their second six-game skid of the season. They haven't lost seven in a row since a club record-tying eight-game slide from Nov. 3-20, 2005.

Anaheim took a two-goal lead into the third period of Friday's meeting with Chicago, but gave up four straight goals in the frame to suffer a 6-5 defeat. Bobby Ryan scored twice and Teemu Selanne had a goal and an assist in a loss that dropped the Ducks to 2-11-4 in their last 17 games.

Jonas Hiller stopped 28 shots before being pulled in the third period. Dan Ellis halted 8-of-9 shots in relief.

"That was tough," said Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf, whose club dropped the opener of a six-game homestand. "We came out with the energy we wanted, we just didn't finish."

Toronto is coming off its second straight win, a 4-3 shootout triumph over Dallas on Friday. Joffrey Lupul scored the only goal of the breakaway session, while Jonas Gustavsson came up with two big stops around the goal.

Gustavsson, who made 26 saves through overtime, got lucky on Jamie Benn's second-round attempt as it rang off the post. The Toronto netminder then stuck with Mike Ribeiro's backhand shot to secure the extra point.

"It's a good win for us," Lupul said. "It's good when we're playing in these close games to get two points."

Joey Crabb, Dion Phaneuf and Clarke MacArthur scored for the Maple Leafs, with the latter netting the go-ahead goal at the 6:55 mark of the third on a tap-in of Tim Connolly's centering pass. Toronto has won three of its last four and concludes a four-game swing tonight.

Injuries continue to hit the Maple Leafs, who lost David Steckel and Carl Gunnarsson to undisclosed aliments in the win. Both players are questionable for this game.

Toronto is already without goaltender James Reimer due to concussion-like symptoms, while Mikhail Grabovski, Mike Brown, Matthew Lombardi and Mike Komisarek are all on injured reserve.

Grabovski scored twice and MacArthur had a goal and two assists in last year's 5-2 home win over the Ducks in the lone meeting between the clubs. The Maple Leafs have won six of their last nine over Anaheim overall and three of their last five at the Honda Center.
