Jets welcome Senators to MTS Centre
Nov 29, 2011 - 4:09 PM (Sports Network) - After finishing October strong, the current month hasn't been as kind to the Ottawa Senators. The Winnipeg Jets, meanwhile, are looking to close out November on a roll while keeping up their hot play at home.
The Jets try to run their winning streak at MTS Centre to four straight while denying the Senators a .500 record for the month in tonight's battle between Canadian clubs.
Beginning with tonight's contest, the Jets will play 11 of their next 12 at home and sport a 5-3-0 record as the host this season thanks in part to a perfect three-game homestand from Nov. 14-19.
Winnipeg returns to Manitoba to start a five-game homestand off a 1-1-1 road trip in which its power play struggled. The Jets scored six times on 15 power- play chances on their perfect residency, but went 0-for-7 during the road trip on the man advantage.
In Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Bruins, Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien scored first-period goals to stake the Jets to a quick lead before Boston scored four unanswered. Ondrej Pavelec made 32 saves as Winnipeg went 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Jets will hope for better success tonight against the Senators, who closed out October with a six-game win streak before posting a 4-5-2 mark thus far in November. Ottawa went 3-2-1 on a recent road trip before returning home on Sunday to defeat Carolina 4-3. The Sens head right back out on the road for three in a row beginning tonight.
Jason Spezza scored a pair of goals in the first period versus the Hurricanes, with the second giving him 200 in his career. The forward hadn't scored in his previous 11 games.
"It's been a while since I scored, they usually come in bunches for me," said Spezza. "It was nice to get my 200th out of the way and it's obviously a big accomplishment, something to be proud of."
David Rundblad scored the first NHL goal of his career and Zack Smith also lit the lamp, while Craig Anderson ended with 34 saves.
Ottawa was shorthanded eight times in the game, but held Carolina to just one goal.
Spezza and Milan Michalek both had three-point games when the Senators hosted the Jets back on Oct. 20, a 4-1 Ottawa victory. Michalek scored twice, Spezza had two assists and Anderson ended with 35 saves.
Pavelec allowed three goals on 29 shots and Byfuglien scored the lone goal for the Jets, who had won seven of their previous 10 as the host against the Senators when they were located in Atlanta.
