Oilers host Blue Jackets on Grant Fuhr night
Dec 2, 2011 - 4:14 PM (Sports Network) - On the night former great Grant Fuhr will be honored, the Edmonton Oilers hope to end a three-game losing streak in front of the former Stanley Cup-winning goaltender versus the Columbus Blue Jackets.Fuhr backstopped the Oilers to four championships and is a member of the Hall of Fame. The Oilers are counting on Fuhr to bring some magic back into Rexall Place, where they are 0-2 so far on a six-game homestand. They are 0-2-1 in their last three contests overall and suffered their eighth loss in the last 11 tries with Wednesday's 3-2 shootout loss versus Minnesota.
Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who blew a 2-0 lead and got 27 saves from Nikolai Khabibulin.
"We did some good things especially in the first and then we just had a short amount of time in the second where we let our foot off the gas and they were able to capitalize," Edmonton's Sam Gagner said. "It's just the little things we just weren't hard on pucks and turned pucks over and they were able to get some life and ultimately it cost us the game."
The Oilers are 7-3-2 at home and sit six points off the Northwest Division lead. They will also welcome Calgary, Carolina and Colorado to Alberta on this current residency.
Eberle has six goals and 15 points in his last nine games for an Edmonton squad that has posted two goals or less in six of the past 11 contests.
Columbus will resume a four-game road trip tonight and ended a two-game slide with a 4-3 shootout victory at Calgary on Thursday.
Blue Jackets star Rick Nash scored the tying goal late in regulation and netted the lone tally in the shootout for Columbus, which won for the fourth time in seven tries (4-2-1) and improved to 2-8-2 as the guest. Columbus is last in the Western Conference with 17 points and will also visit Montreal.
"I like the fact we didn't stop playing," said Columbus coach Scott Arniel.
Nash has three goals in his last four games. The Blue Jackets have not won in regulation on the road this season.
The Blue Jackets and Oilers are meeting for the first time since splitting four matchups a season ago. Columbus has won six of the last nine matchups with Edmonton, winners in 13 of the past 17 contests as the host in this series.
