Canucks finish strong to down Flames

Dec 5, 2011 - 6:19 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - David Booth and Chris Higgins each scored a goal and added two assists, and the Canucks netted five unanswered to down the Flames, 5-1, at Rogers Arena.

Roberto Luongo, who had not started since November 13 due to an upper-body injury, made 21 saves to earn the win, Vancouver's sixth in seven games.

Kevin Bieksa, Daniel Sedin and Jannik Hansen all scored in the victory.

"The guys did a really good job not creating turnovers and making sure they didn't have any odd-man rushes," said Luongo.

Henrik Karlsson gave up all five goals on 32 shots before suffering an apparent leg injury in the third period. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped the only four shots he faced in the final 13-plus minutes.

Calgary's Alex Tanguay scored with 1:26 remaining in the opening period, but the final two frames were all Canucks, starting with Bieksa registering a power-play goal at the 5:13 mark of the second stanza.

Higgins gave the Canucks the lead with 58.6 seconds remaining in the middle stanza with a backhand out front.

Booth's wraparound goal 40 seconds into the third made it 3-1, and Hansen extended the margin with his seventh goal of the year 1:14 later.

Sedin's sharp-angle tally from the left side at 5:42 accounted for the final score.

"We just completely turned off the switch and got away from everything that made us successful," said Flames forward Lee Stempniak. "(We) really struggled and then embarrassed ourselves the last two periods."

Game Notes

Mason Raymond assisted on Hansen's goal in his first game of the season. He missed Vancouver's first 25 contests due to a fractured vertebrae...The Flames were coming off a 5-3 win at Edmonton on Saturday...The Canucks went 2-for-6 on the power play.
