Maple Leafs take down Rangers
Dec 6, 2011 - 4:26 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Jonas Gustavsson made 30 saves and Phil Kessel added two assists as the Toronto Maple Leafs snapped New York's five-game winning streak with a 4-2 win over the Rangers.Cody Franson, Tim Connolly, Joffrey Lupul and David Steckel tallied for the Maple Leafs, who snapped a two-game losing skid.
"We thought we controlled the play pretty good other than some penalties," Lupul said. "I think we got some tough calls in the third, but our penalty- killers were up for the challenge and did a great job."
Artem Anisimov and Marian Gaborik netted goals for New York, which had its seven-game home winning streak come to an end.
Henrik Lundqvist stopped 26-of-29 shots in the loss.
Franson got the Maple Leafs on the board first, 6:01 into the first period, as his slap shot beat Lundqvist from the high point.
The Maple Leafs got a pair of goals in a span of 1:37 to take a 3-0 lead, 6:49 into the second period.
Connolly put home a loose puck in the crease, and Lupul finished from the slot on the power-play off a well-placed pass by Tyler Bozak from the right boards.
But the Rangers answered with a pair of tallies 1:32 apart to cut the margin back to one heading into the final period.
Anisimov found a loose rolling puck in the high slot and snapped it past Gustavsson to make it 3-1, and Gaborik tallied on a 5-on-3 power-play as he tipped home a lightning-quick Derek Stephan pass from the left boards.
Toronto's Clarke MacArthur received a high-sticking penalty with 1:30 to go in the third period, but Gustavsson made some big saves on New York's power-play and Steckel added an empty-netter with five seconds left to solidify the win for the Leafs.
"(Jonas Gustavsson) was really good, and he made some big saves at the end," Rangers forward Brian Boyle said. "It was frustrating for me because I had a chance to score on the power play there (late in the third), but he made the save, and then a couple more."
