Devils storm back to take down Sens in shootout

Dec 9, 2011 - 5:05 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Adam Henrique scored in the fourth round of the shootout to give the New Jersey Devils a 5-4 win over the Ottawa Senators.

Henrique skated in on net and made a quick move to the backhand to lift the puck past Alex Auld. Johan Hedberg then sealed the win when he squeezed the pads together on a low shot from David Rundblad.

Zach Parise had a goal and an assist while Dainius Zubrus, Ilya Kovalchuk and Mattias Tedenby all scored for the Devils, who rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win their second straight game.

Martin Brodeur started in net, but was pulled after 20 minutes as he gave up two goals on nine shots. Hedberg stopped 18-of-20 shots the rest of the way for the win.

"We scored three great goals to get us back in the game," said Hedberg. "It's a good feeling to come back and win this game the way we did."

Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and an assist and Milan Michalek, Jesse Winchester and Nick Foligno each had a goal for the Senators, who have lost four of five. Auld stopped 27 shots in the loss.

"They pressure so well and we just weren't as sharp as we needed to be," said Foligno. "We're going to regroup and come back out here on Saturday. We know we're a better team than the result of tonight's game."

Michalek scored 6:31 into the game for his league-leading 18th goal of the year when he snapped home a rebound chance from Jason Spezza, who got the puck along the right boards off a weak wraparound from Brodeur.

Foligno made it 2-0 with 2:15 left in the opening frame as he backhanded in a rebound in front for his 10th of the season.

The Senators took a 3-0 lead in the second on the power play when Alfredsson's one-timer from the top of the left circle made its way past Hedberg 9:41 in.

New Jersey, though, got one back while shorthanded as Parise's one-timer from the right circle off a feed from Henrique made it a 3-1 game with 5:01 to play in the second.

The Devils scored another shorthanded goal when Zubrus was fed for a breakaway and beat Auld with a heavy wrister 2:59 into the third.

Tedenby scored at the 9:08 mark while Kovalchuk lit the lamp 37 seconds later to give the Devils a 4-3 lead.

With New Jersey on a 4-on-3 power play, Ottawa pulled Auld and was able to tie the game as Alfredsson blasted a shot on net from the left point and Winchester was able to jam home the rebound with five seconds left.

Game Notes

New Jersey hosts Montreal on Saturday...Ottawa hosts Vancouver on Saturday...The Senators took three of four from the Devils last season.
