Jets down 'Canes to win 4th straight
Dec 10, 2011 - 5:30 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Chris Mason stopped 23 shots and four different players scored goals as the Winnipeg Jets took a 4-2 decision over the Carolina Hurricanes at MTS Centre.Dustin Byfuglien, Evander Kane, Tim Stapleton and Bryan Little netted goals for Winnipeg, while Blake Wheeler added three assists in the Jets' fourth straight win.
"I thought the turning point of the game was Mason," Jets head coach Claude Noel said. "I thought he played a really strong, clean game and you can see why I like him."
Justin Faulk and Brandon Sutter lit the lamp for Carolina, which dropped its eighth game in nine tries.
Cam Ward started in net for the Hurricanes but was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on 30 shots. Mike Murphy entered in relief and stopped all seven shots he faced.
Winnipeg took control early when Byfuglien banked a puck into the net off Ward from behind the cage just 34 seconds into the opening period.
Kane's goal came at the 5:04 mark of the first when he threw the puck towards the net from the left circle and it bounced off the skate of Carolina's Jamie McBain and past the goaltender.
Carolina was denied on two breakaway chances within the first nine minutes of the second period before the Jets put the game out of reach with two quick strikes.
The first came at the 10:16 mark while on a 4-on-3 power play when Stapleton ripped a slap shot from the high slot that went through a screen and into the twine.
Winnipeg then took a 4-0 lead a little over a minute later on another power play opportunity on Little's wrister from up close that slipped under the crossbar, resulting in Ward being pulled from the game.
Mason's shutout bid was denied 8:24 into the final stanza on Faulk's first career goal, a snap shot from the blueline that deflected off the stick of a Winnipeg defender in front.
The Hurricanes kept applying pressure in the third, outshooting Winnipeg 10-6 in the period, and brought themselves within two on a Sutter tip-in with 7:47 remaining.
"It's the old saying, catch-up hockey is losing hockey," Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller said. "We got to learn from it, we got to come out better and we have to play the first period like we played the third."
