Price stops late penalty shot as Canadiens edge Devils

Dec 10, 2011 - 11:48 PM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Carey Price denied Zach Parise on a penalty shot in the final minute to secure the Canadiens' 2-1 win over the Devils.

Canadiens defenseman Josh Gorges was whistled for covering the puck in the crease with 49.4 seconds remaining and Montreal holding a tenuous 2-1 lead.

Parise came up slowly on the penalty shot, and his backhand stayed on the ice, allowing Price to kick save the attempt with his left leg.

"I was just trying to go five-hole and I missed my shot," a frustrated Parise said. "I didn't get it back across far enough, so it was kind of an easy save for him."

Price stood tall in the remaining time and totaled 28 saves in the win, Montreal's second in its last eight games. Erik Cole scored the eventual game- winner and assisted on Max Pacioretty's second-period tally.

Nick Palmieri netted the only goal for New Jersey, which got 22 saves from Martin Brodeur.

A delay of game penalty in the opening minute of the second period allowed the Canadiens to break a scoreless tie.

Tomas Kaberle, acquired by Montreal in a trade on Friday, circled around his own net with the puck and skated unabated into the Devils' zone. Cole received a pass at the left circle and dropped another off to Pacioretty, whose quick snap shot between the circles surprised Brodeur at the 1:07 mark.

"[Kaberle is] going to help us out a lot on the power play," Pacioretty said. "I didn't know how good his patience was."

Five minutes into the third, Cole's one-timer was stopped before being inadvertently redirected into the net by Devils defenseman Mark Fayne.

Palmieri's goal went off Kaberle's stick with 6:26 remaining, but the Devils were unable to net the equalizer. They lost for the fifth time in seven games.
