Selanne, Ducks aim to close out Red Wings in West finals
May 22, 2007 - 1:14 PM Detroit at Anaheim 9:00 pm EDT Western Conference finals Ducks lead series, 3-2ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Teemu Selanne has never been to the Stanley Cup Finals. He took a huge step towards that goal in Game Five.
Selanne will look for his first career Finals appearance when the Anaheim Ducks look to close out the top-seeded Detroit Red Wings at home in Game Six of the Western Conference finals on Tuesday.
While Selanne has never been on hockey's biggest stage, Anaheim reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003, losing in seven games to the New Jersey Devils.
It looked like the Ducks, who were outplayed for most of regulation on Sunday, would head home facing elimination before they tied the game in dramatic fashion in the final minute of the third period.
Selanne converted a turnover by defenseman Andreas Lilja into the game-winning goal at 11:57 of overtime, lifting Anaheim to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Detroit and a three-games-to-two lead in the Western Conference finals.
"I've been practicing that move my whole life," Selanne said. "I knew I had to get it up. He goes down and covers up everything down low."
Jean-Sebastien Giguere was another reason the Ducks have a chance at moving on, having his best game of the series with 36 saves in Game Five.
"I just wanted to make sure we still had a chance," Giguere said.
If necessary, Game Seven will be in Detroit on Thursday.
- bones one off-the-wall theory i saw on espn was that Bettman allowed it because there's some kind of movement to make playoff overtime like the regular season - i.e 4v4 and shootout. Which of course, would just be plain insanity - there's nothing quite like sudden death playoff hockey (5 OT Flyers/Pens game anyone? =).
Red Wings vs. DucksMay 24 1:01 AM - jtlynchjr Seriously, though, what league agrees to a contract that lets the network pre-empt overtime? Why even bother with it, if the network treats you like infomercial time.
Red Wings vs. DucksMay 23 10:54 PM - jtlynchjr Even though the Belmont is on ABC three hours before Game 6, I have this sneaking suspicion that NBC still plans to pre-empt hockey, probably to show the Barbaro documentary.
Red Wings vs. DucksMay 23 10:51 PM - bones i just figured the feed provider decided to switch over to pre-race coverage of the Belmont ;-)
